Iirc Stephens was from Chicago. There was chatter about the bathhouse but don’t know if that was based on fact or gossip
They assumed that conservatives would keep away from anything to do with a gay ambassador, and write it off as divine vengeance for his immorality. They don’t know us very well, though.
