Rhode Island health officials are blaming dating apps, such as Tinder and Grindr, for a spike in syphilis, gonorrhea and HIV cases in the state.
Syphilis cases have spiked 79%, while gonorrhea has risen 30%, according to data from 2013 and 2014. New cases of HIV increased by 32%.
"These data send a clear signal that despite the progress we have made in reducing STDs and HIV over the years, there is more work to do," state health director Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott said in a statement.
Officials say the spike there follows a national trend.
"High-risk behaviours include using social media to arrange casual and often anonymous sexual encounters, having sex without a condom, having multiple sex partners, and having sex while under the influence of drugs or alcohol," the statement says.
Health officials also attributed the increase to improved testing.
Preaching to the choir here, but, HIV and the rest of them are not spread by casual contact. You have to engage in certain activities to contract these diseases. Now that blood testing from donors has become much more sophisticated, my chances of ever getting AIDS or whatever are practically zero. I feel sorry for newborn children who inherited such diseases, but any adults, not so much.
I wonder when someone will blame the sexual revolution?
GROIN Mines can go off... even if all you is touch them..
I don’t think much gets by you. Good observation.
NEXT week; is a seminar on lip, nose, and breast mines....
We told you not to put THAT in THERE.
Thanks. I’m trying to be clever on my phone. It’s a struggle!
While the story seems to blame Tinder and Grindr equally, I'd bet Grindr accounts for the vast majority of STD profiled here.
Apps don’t spread STD’s, people spread STD’s.
After participating in dangerous and immoral sexual practices, what did the nasty promiscuous homosexuals think would happen?
Here in WV it is a staggering 113 percent increase in syphilis alone. A seventeenth century disease with a seventeenth century cause and a seventeen century rot. Unfortunately, it is also being driven by IV drugs, in addition to it’s usual transmission. Co-infections of Hep C and HIV in heterosexual women too. In all my years of healthcare, I have never seen these rates (and mine are based on observation, not actual data.. Except the 113 percent, that is state data for my county.
I am waiting to hear when the Cuban variant of HIV hits this country. Full blown AIDS in two years. It won’t be a cool homosexual badge of honor then.
Glad to be happily married.
They should at least be labeled sex offenders.
Wow.
It seems unlikely to me that your population is hooking up on Grindr, but who knows these days?
Quite so.

Wow! You learn something new every day! I had no idea that one could contract an STD from an electronic device.
And condoms are useless as all but HIV/AIDS are spread by skin to skin contact. The safe sex mantra of my era was a total joke. So glad I never bought into that.
Lib natural selection...
LOL. What happens? Do the websites hypnotize users into having sex with multiple strangers? Or is this yet another example of our personal responsibility free society in action?
