So why would a former Speaker of the House pay extortion money to a Democrat when its possible to set up a sting operation, catch the criminal and save yourself a load of money?

This is Illinois, legendary for its political corruption. Of the last seven Governors, four ended up in prison.

Rod Blagojevich [DEMOCRAT] – Governor from 2002 through 2009, when he became the first Illinois governor in history to be impeached. and removed from office Convicted of numerous corruption charges in 2011, including allegations that he tried to sell or trade Barack Obama’s vacated Senate seat.

George Ryan [Republican] – Governor from 1999 through 2003. After leaving office, was convicted of racketeering for actions as governor and secretary of state. In November 2007, began serving a 6 1/2 year sentence in federal prison.

Dan Walker [DEMOCRAT]– Governor from 1973-1977. Pleaded guilty to bank fraud and other charges in 1987 related to his business activities after leaving office. Spent about a year and a half in federal prison.

Otto Kerner [DEMOCRAT]– Governor from 1961-1968. Resigned to become a judge, then was convicted of bribery related to his tenure as governor. Sentenced to three years in prison.

[ I wonder if Hastert had a ‘Jerry Sandusky’ problem?............. ]

I once heard someone high up say “You’s be surprised how many people in power in the United States were compromised”

[ So it is now a crime to withdraw your own money ( of which taxes have already been paid )if you do it in amounts just under $10,000. Because he did that, it triggered an investigation from the FBI. He then “lied” to the FBI saying that he was keeping the money in his house. What fu**ing business is it of theirs what he does with the money after he withdraws it. Technically. he didn’t lie. He kept the money in the house, then decided to spend it. As far as I know, paying extortion money isn’t a crime. If so, then Clintons payoffs of hush money to his trysts should be investigated. ]

[ Lots of innuendo, not many facts. . . but sounds like political attack. ]

Either that or he has been compromised for a very long time and now he has been used up so they are going to use him by burning him publicly...

Some guess it is a child from an affair. I don’t care he was a terrible speaker and never once tried to lower spending - this is a pay back for being a louse.

Yeah, prosecutors even joke about it:

From the book Three Felonies A Day

At the federal prosecutor’s office in the Southern District of New York, the staff, over beer and pretzels, used to play a darkly humorous game. Junior and senior prosecutors would sit around, and someone would name a random celebrity—say, Mother Theresa or John Lennon. It would then be up to the junior prosecutors to figure out a plausible crime for which to indict him or her. The crimes were not usually rape, murder, or other crimes you’d see on Law & Order but rather the incredibly broad yet obscure crimes that populate the U.S. Code like a kind of jurisprudential minefield: Crimes like “false statements” (a felony, up to five years), “obstructing the mails” (five years), or “false pretenses on the high seas” (also five years). The trick and the skill lay in finding the more obscure offenses that fit the character of the celebrity and carried the toughest sentences. The result, however, was inevitable: “prison time,” as one former prosecutor told me.

One ‘victim’ was paid over 3 million dollars. That implies, more than one ‘victim’ and an illegitimate child would not be a great enough ‘bad act’ to warrant $3M by today’s standards.

H e was a HS wrestling coach before entering into politics..................seems to add up...............

One has to wonder why “they” ousted Newt and put Hastert in was that “they” had the dirt to control Hastert....

And by “they” I mean either the corrupt GOPe machine or the so called “power elite” that run things...

No. Why do we always give the benefit of the doubt to these folks. I remember when the Duggar story came out. Some here were saying it was an attack against Christianity. No it was an worthy attack against Josh and was reasonable to think he is a scumbag and guilty as heck.

Same with Hasert, I always found him to be sketchy. Glad the truth is coming out on this guy. He was a disaster for Republicans. He is 73 and the statutes of limitations are expired so he won’t go to jail for diddling with the student so he will go to jail for other reasons. Either way he needs to pay for his actions revolting that they are.

It would scare me to death to try to blackmail someone who could come up with three million dollars.....

for about 50,000 dollars, he could make certain that he didn't ever have to pay me the three million....

and if he was a bad ass then......he still is.
