Abolish prison and give everyone a gun. The end. Good night. Oh wait, thats not enough for a column? Okay, how about legalize drugs too? Im not kidding. I know it sounds outrageous but hate facts often are.
Look, Im not suggesting we send all the guards home and open up the gates tomorrow. America is too ensconced in prison culture. Most prisoners today have become bad people and its because of prison. So, for the sake of the argument, lets pretend a massive plague killed everyone in prison. Its a horrific tragedy beyond our control and conspiracy theorists are going to have a field day but it happened. Now can we legalize drugs, abolish prison, and give everyone a gun?
I asked More Guns Less Crime author John Lott about it and his answers were disappointing. Empiricists are no fun. I dont know, he replied. We dont have the data. He did concede that America has an intense prison culture with 38% of black males having a felony background. He also backed up Bill Whittles claim that the remarkably gun-heavy Plano, Texas has pretty much the lowest crime rate in the world (0.4 homicides per 100,000). Lott is a human Google machine when it comes to guns and crimes and I learned a lot from our conversation. I learned the black family was far more intact in the 1950s and their propensity for crime back then was actually similar to whites. I learned almost nobody gets arrested simply for marijuana possession (0.3% in Arizona) and the vast majority of drug offenses involve trafficking. Take drugs out of the equation and crimes pretty much over.

Abolish prisons, liberalize the gun laws, require all law-abiding citizens to own at least one firearm, have a firearms holiday centralized around the 4th of July for education and practice using firearms, teach firearms safety and marksmanship in public schools, and declare open season on all violent criminals.
Violent crime drop precipitously to the point Leftists won’t know what to do.
I sold some extra 22LR I had during the recent shortage to a guy that had moved here from NY State. He said he and his wife had once been anti gun libs. No more. He told me he now truly believed that adage:
An armed society is a polite society.
When my nephew came to our small town for a while, I asked him if he knew that half the homes here were armed, and he were of felonious nature, would he break into a home. Nope said he.
A now-deceased friend of mine was a judge. His idea was to issue to every prisoner a knife and a loaded gun the day they check into prison just as they receive their new, perky uniform and bedding.
I like that idea!
Wow Jack, what a great idea, wish I would have thought of it. Not being funny when I say, “Surprisingly, it just might work.” Now all you need is someone to carry the torch to get it done.
The criminal justice system certainly is not getting it done.
We could also have tribunals for judges and lawyers who should be recalled and/or disbarred.
How about extensively expanding one of the US owned Atolls in the Pacific, then sentence many of the prisoners to transportation?
The Purge movies have some good points.
Never heard of them. What are they? Have any links?
I disapprove of releasing people who pose a danger to society. One compromise solution is appropriate application of the death penalty:
Child molester? Death.
Forcible rape? Death.
Armed robbery? Death.
Attempted murder? Death.
Treason? Death.
Voting for Obama? See “Treason” above.
Second offense on burglary? Death.
Pretty much, anyone who is too dangerous to release after two years is not worth keeping alive. Anyone who is not too dangerous to release should have no firearms restrictions at all. Prisons would be a lot cheaper (and safer for the non-career criminals). Society would be a lot safer. If it’s not worth the death penalty, and it’s not worth two years in prison, there shouldn’t be a law against it.
In effect, this moron author is saying that "good" people are being sent to prison, and come out "bad". Whadda maroon!
I don't know how people can excuse crimes of violence and predation, even among the young, as "mistakes" that can be learned from.
To me they are signs of highly disordered souls, and people who have shown that they can't be trusted to live among civil society should be removed from it permanently.
Let them repent for their soul in prison or in a prison colony.
The two movies are “The Purge” and “The Purge: Anarchy”, where once a year, for 24 hours, the government sanctions the killing of anyone who dares to walk the streets. This is because crime is nonexistent and people must release their natural tendencies by killing, raping, etc. Strictly entertainment.
