You don’t have to conduct tests, its already been done. The results were as you predicted.

>> the real issue, which is, why is the Euro/white section of the country (apparently) doing so well and the darker section not? <<

Agreed. And I guess it’s basically the same question as to why black control of a city like Baltimore or of a country like South Africa seems inevitably to be followed by decay and social chaos. Is it culture? Is it genetics? A mixture of the two? Maybe Tom Sowell has a good answer.

>> having not been there <<

A musician like yourself? IMHO it’s well worth a trip just to hear bossa nova performed live in its native land!

>> he alludes to these favelas and I think those are in the cities contained in the lower half, correct? <<

Good question. There certainly are huge favelas in Rio and Sao Paulo, but I don’t know if they exist to the same extent in the “more European” areas like Santa Catarina. And perhaps most of the north is accurately described as “one big favela.” I guess we need a Brazil-experienced FReeper to log into this thread.

As a rocker, interestingly, my first album was . . . Dave Brubeck Quartet, “Bossa Nova USA.” I love bossa nova music.

In my experience, the majority of musicians are with you -- whether their own specialties be rock, jazz, blues, country, symphony stuff or whatever.

As for me, I love bossa nova so much that I learned the basics of Portuguese just to understand the words!
