The optimist in me reads this sentence, which supposedly explains why water gun fights are wrong, then slaps the cynic for being too forgiving: “Why the rule? A Scouter once told me this explanation I liked quite a bit: ‘A Scout is kind. What part of pointing a firearm [simulated or otherwise] at someone is kind?’”

Quoting a 2015 manual doesn’t mean the BSA always had that policy. They certainly did not when I was a Cub Scout years ago. Back then, at a Cub Scout meeting, we threw knives into the ground at each others feet...

Also, that claim is wrong.

When BSA first started, there were other competing boys' organizations, at least one of which was very "paramilitary." The BSA always went above and beyond to make sure they were not seen as such.

For example, my own sons sometimes would wear camo. But, with their troop, they weren't allowed to wear camo. And that policy was in effect several years ago.

I was a Scout in Nashville, Tennessee back in the late 1960s. My troop was made up of mostly working class boys from the neighborhoods around Belmont Methodist Church which was home to the troop. Overall I would say that my experience with that Troop was not what it should have been. We had no problems with faggots but still the woodscraft taught was at a poor level and the secular morality was on the trendy side. I take my own boys, backpacking, shooting, and foraging. I will not allow my Scout-age son to join a troop based upon what I know of the BSA and its direction.
