But what will we tip to? A new forced social order? Social chaos? Despotism? Religious revival? Question is also after we have tipped, what about life will have meaning? Wealth or the struggle for money? Self-actualization and gratification? Or maybe nothing?
Perhaps a mixture of all of the above for different groups of people.
One thing I know as I approach 53 as a tail end baby boomer, I have never seen so many “lost” younger people. No social skills, head buried in an Iphone and no interest in learning anything.
Before anybody jumps down my throat for broad brushing, I will say 98% are exactly as I described above.
“Morality” as a generally accepted code of behavior/conduct in our pluralistic society is increasingly no longer tethered to the Bible. Do we pin it to the Golden Rule - do unto others that which we would have done to us? Or perhaps herald back to the Maxims of Roman Law something on the order of the maxim sic utere tuo ut alienum non laedas - one must use his property so as not to injure the lawful rights of another. Certainly, in the rejection of traditional Christian mores, we do not want to find ourselves with Sharia as our moral code.
It's ancient Rome redux. We are entering a post-Christian age. While many people still call themselves Christians, their faith has little practical effect on their lives.
C.S. Lewis foresaw this post-Christian society. He warned that it will be worse than pre-Christian society, because while the pagans were innocently ignorant of Christ, post-Christian society will have actively rejected Christ.
It's a sobering thought.
