There is a charter STEM school in downtown Dayton. Because some of the startup money came from a "social justice" source, the school has to accept students by lottery, instead of picking those passing appropriate tests. Seems like a lousy way to decide who should attend a school where the curriculum should be heavy on science and math courses.

My 5-yo grand daughter applied to a charter classical academy; 136 applicants for 10 (!) seats. She drew #6, but still no offer to enroll. The school says there will be some movement as the start of the school year draws nearer.
We’re in WalMart ground zero, so there is a lot of parental mobility. Still, it seems like the opportunities here are too limited. I believe every child who wants this opportunity should have it...
