American woman killed in South Africa lion attack

JOHANNESBURG -- A lion killed an American woman and injured a man driving through a private wildlife park in Johannesburg on Monday, a park official said.

The attack occurred at around 2:30 p.m. when a lioness approached the passenger side of the vehicle as the woman took photos and then lunged, said Scott Simpson, assistant operations manager at the Lion Park.

"They had their windows all the way down, which is strictly against policy," he said. "The lion bit the lady through the window." The driver then tried to punch the lion and was scratched by the animal.

Park staff quickly chased the lion away from the car and an ambulance arrived promptly. "Unfortunately, she did pass away," said Simpson, adding that the U.S. Embassy had been informed.

I could be wrong, but I thought horses that bite are generally the ones that have been abused. I also know to watch my feet when near a horse. Horses weigh a lot. Don’t wear steel toed shoes either.

I wouldn’t underestimate dogs.

Cats and just about any other animal, that’s true, but dogs occupy an interesting place in human existence.

I read a study a while back where they had people wear special glasses that could track the movements of their eyes precisely, and they found that when two people encounter each other, both eyes of each person simultaneously scan one eye of the other person (I think they said the left eye)

It happens so quickly that we don’t know we do it, and it isn’t noticeable, but the instruments picked it up.

They ended up testing a bunch of other animals of all sizes, and they only found one other creature that does that exact same thing: You guessed it...dogs.

Additionally, they found that dogs are cued into humans in ways no other animal is. They did an experiment where they would put a treat under an upturned bucket, and have a little shell game with two identical, empty upturned buckets.

A human would gesture towards the bucket with the treat, and try to get the animal to go to it and get the invisible treat by overturning the bucket. They tried it with chimps, birds, cats, etc.

None of them would take the cue of the human pointing to the bucket with the treat under it. Except for dogs.

They took a little puppy, and the puppy picked it up immediately when the person pointed at it, literally on the first try.

Further, the person didn’t even have to point, they could simply look. More remarkable, they didn’t even have to linger with the look. They could just flash their eyes for a split second at the bucket with the treat, and the puppy would go unerringly to it.

Dogs have lived around humans so long that they are tuned into us, emotionally and physically. So they are a little bit different than other animals in this respect.

pretty sure that’s urban legend material.

Pretty sure it isn't. I remember reading about it at the time

Are there lions in "Bambi

No there aren't, but for the hard of understanding, I'll explain. I was generalizing ie. I was using a specific example (Bambi) to illustrate what's wrong with peoples' attitudes toward animals. Or, to put it another way, I was referring to the general attitude in a lot of people that is engendered by the cartoon cutsie anthropomorphic approach to animals portrayed by the various Disney kids movies and similar such. Many people actually think that animals behave like they do in Disney movies. This is the attitude that will get you in trouble.

Right.

I swear some horses have a sense of humor, and a nasty one at that. A cousin of mine had a horse that was fine as long as you faced him and didn’t turn you back. If you were within his reach, he’d nip you on the shoulder and then whinney like he was laughing! The equine equivalent of tapping someone on the shoulder from the other side just to see them turn and see no one there......................

Yes, I got your point, I was just playing dumb. Animals don’t talk and they don’t behave as they do in cartoons. Of the millions of dogs alive today, not one thinks he is a WWI pilot trying to shoot down the Red Baron. In fact, if you asked dogs they would do no better than the college kids in “Watters’ World” at telling you who the Red Baron was.

“”I could be wrong, but I thought horses that bite are generally the ones that have been abused.””

Not necessarily. As a rule, studs and geldings tend to bite rather than kick. Mares tend to kick rather than bite. But both can and will do either.

Both will strike (attack with a front hoof) when defending themselves.

One thing about a horse bite, they can bite clean through your forearm if they want to, their jaws are very powerful.

Now that be some total ignorant asses right there. Looks like someone in the white SUV in particular is letting their kid make lion bait of himself.
