I lived in Virginia Beach in the early 80s. A plane crashed on deck and several 500 lb. bombs exploded. I saw the Nimitz as it rounded the Virginia Capes and took a photo. I still have it somewhere.
It went into Norfolk Naval Shipyard and they had it back in service in just a few days.
What a great “road” trip! On the sea! Good job, Lauren!
See ya in 2 days! :)
ADM. Nimitz this Young (67yrs young) Army Major salutes you.
Whoo Hoo!
Just got Email confirmation,of my lifetime membership to VFW as a “Member at large” LOL
That was fast.
I only applied last night.
In the 80s, I had a chance to go out on the USS Nimitz on family day. My son flew the EA 6B. It was a most interesting trip. Sailors gave group tours on the ship, and at one time I asked our guide if it seemed strange to have so many women and children aboard. His answer? “It’s the perfume, Ma’am.” LOL!
My son served several tours on the Nimitz. One time he landed without the flaps coming down. (a broken $12 bolt!!) He took several practice runs to use gas, and then came in successfully at FULL speed — earning a commendation. But he was unhappy with his landing — getting the 2nd hook, rather than the better and choice 3rd hook!!!! Sigh.
Good morning, Everyone.
Good morning to our
Military, our Allies, and their families.
Thank you, Lauren, for preparing the
Canteen for todays activities.
Just checking in,
then back to lurker mode.
We finally got some much needed rain at the homestead.
The rain had been going around us; however,
sometime during the night it must have dumped some.
Gonna make my rounds. Please stay.
Grab a cup of joe or tasty tea.
Chat with the military and/or the family they left behind.
The FR Canteen is
Come on in and sit for a while.
There's always plenty of coffee, tea,
pancakes,
conversation,
silliness,
and plain old BS

I was a young ET3 in 1980 when I checked on board Nimitz. Spent 39 months working on comms gear. My first ship, and the best!!!
