Second Chance For Dog Found In Her Dead Owner's Arms After Texas Tornado
HuffPost ^ | 5-19-2015 | Arin Greenwood

Posted on 06/03/2015 8:57:59 AM PDT by bimboeruption

In the wake of a deadly tornado that destroyed parts of Van, Texas, a week ago, a dog was found curled up with her dead owner David Tapley, a retired police officer, and nearby his wife, Brenda.

The Great Pyrenees, thought to be about 8 years old (solid information about her previous life, including her name, is hard to come by), is banged up, emotionally and physically.

She's showing signs of shock; her skin is raw and bruised. She has some head trauma, and is now deaf in one ear from a burst eardrum.

But, rather miraculously, she's alive. She has a new name -- Emma -- given to her by a new family, who themselves have one new goal: to help this dog heal.

"My mom and I agreed that we would set her birthday at her survival date. That is the day her life changed. It helps us honor the lives of her owners that perished in the tornado," says Michelle Shockley, who, along with her parents, has adopted Emma. "Trust me, I cry a lot."

Emma wasn't David and Brenda Tapleys' only pet. Five others -- along with a dozen-odd other animals affected by the tornado -- were brought from the devastation in Van to a horse farm about 20 miles away, where they're being taken care of by the group Nicholas Pet Haven.

Cindy Nash, founder of Nicholas Pet Haven, says that these animals, mostly, remarkably, are seeming OK. (The rest will be up for adoption soon.)

Emma seemed worst hit.

"She has the saddest face and is absolutely traumatized," says Nash. "You can't help but cry when you look at her and just want to sit and hold and love her."

She was found in her dead owner's arms. I think they were protecting each other from the tornado.

I know my dogs would do the same for me.

I would adopt her this minute if she didn’t already have a home.

Thankfully this dog has a new good home and will live a good life.

GOD blesses us in many ways, we tend to believe we deserve the best. Life is amazing, thank God for his loving kindness, and tender mercies, and for the Holy Scriptures, telling us what to do, how to live and what not to do. We praise the LORD and Thank the LORD for life, liberty, America, freedom, faith, and love, and salvation, and much more, in Jesus name, amen.

Trul heartbreaking and she must have been completely in shock. My previous Pyernesse, all since passed, were very protective of my family and farm. Nothing was allowed to approach and they wouldn’t even allow my neighbors to get their mail from the boxes in front of my house until they were properly socialized with them.

The look on their faces and their slow wagging tail will fool some to think they are approachable but they can be very aggressive if raised as livestock protectors as they were bred for.

Amen and amen!

I thank the Lord every day for creating animals and for putting a love for them in our hearts.

Isn’t it amazing how dogs know what they’re supposed to do?

Reads as though the dog got a great new home. Prayers up for the Tapley family. Very sad. Heartbreaking actually.

When we moved to farm, Reno, my big male decided he didn’t want to live in the pasture anymore and would roam my yard and next door neighbors. They were an elderly couple in their 80’s and would complain that he would be leaving his land mines over there. We would always apologize and made it a habit to clean their yard twice a day. They soon csme to rely on him as he would alert them to anyone pulling in to their driveway. The husband died about a year later and shortly Reno did too. Afterwards our neighbor came over said how much he meant to them and how they could sleep better knowing Reno was on patrol.

A lot of Great Pyrenees I have seen are sad faced. The body language with the new owner is contentment.

I’m just gonna sit here and cry.

My Dobes sleep on me every night, guarding me from whatever they imagine may happen.

I can’t guess how deeply something like that would affect them.
