With Eldridge bowing out, Democrats have some options among local officials, including Ulster County Executive Mike Hein. Former state Sen. Terry Gipson has also been mentioned as a potential candidate.

On the Republican side, Gibson is expected to retire at the end of his current term as he considers a run for statewide office in 2018, most likely for governor.

Republicans mentioned to replace Gibson in Congress include Assemblyman Peter Lopez, Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin and Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro.

I wish Sean Eldridge had run again, his candidacy was a joke. On our side, I’m leaning towards Peter Lopez, but don’t know a lot about him.

it’s probably true everywhere, but my 2 months in Dutchess for Tedisco ... I found the GOPers to be rather petty, full of rivalries and jealousy.

I love country politics anyway. and dutchess can be for a country boy

Yes, Peter Lopez sounds like the best of the Republicans considering the race. He’s a conservative with the record to prove it in the state Assembly, his Assembly district is entirely (or just about) within the congressional district, and he wouldn’t be vacating a critical, competitive state Senate district in order to run. And as an added bonus, he would be yet another Hispanic Republican congressman, which will help change the narrative that Hispanics need to be Democrats.
