A survey published by the Pew Research Center on Wednesday showed that the majority of Germans would be against their country using military means to defend a NATO ally against Russian aggression.

Despite the notion that an attack on one is an attack on all being enshrined as Clause 5 in the NATO Charter, 58 percent of Germans said they would be against helping a NATO member on the border with Russia militarily.

Only 38 percent of Germans said they would agree with the triggering of Clause 5 under such circumstances. …

It is my observation is that the over-expanded NATO will not hold together under stress. That is not a wish; it is an opinion. And it looks like European public opinion is breaking down as I have predicted.

Not correct. Many of the most loyal members of NATO are the “over extended” new members. Meanwhile, socialist leaning Germany was trying to surrender the Cold War from the 1960s on. This limp attitude toward Russia is not new at all and I am quite surprised that you as “always a Marine” didn’t know that.

It was well known during the Cold War that the US military positioned units in critical areas of Germany because it questioned if they would actually fight a Soviet invasion. What we see in the article is nothing new, unfortunately.

I know quite a bit about NATO as well, having been in NATO and training with various NATO Special Operations units in Europe, including the Germans.

Compared to Obama, your views are similar to his in regards to our military, but yours are farther to the left of him when it comes to Russia, he actually seems to be less anti-NATO/America, than you are.

NATO is doing fine, and is so far, annoying the heck out of you, as they continue to move troops and equipment forward to counter Russia, and take steps to strengthen us, as Putin invades countries, including NATO developing a new tip of the spear, quick reaction force.

NATO may even be expanding, as Sweden and Finland now consider joining, our closeness to many NATO nations is growing as they seek to reinforce the NATO ability to defend itself and ask NATO to station troops and bases in their nations.

NATO is the answer to preventing you guys from rebuilding, and threatening the world again.

If there was no fear of “further Soviet aggression”, then why did they steal the plans for and built a nuclear weapon?

Communism is like Islam—it is bent on conquering the world.

Since the left abuses the phrase “differing opinion” too often, that makes you sound on the left side of the equation with all due respect.

Let’s hope your exuberance and bravado translates to reality. I have very serious doubts about the dependability and staying power of our present allies. Europe of today is a pale shadow of the 1970s and 1980s, and is now entering rapid demographic decline that will stress past and current assumptions. For this reason, I believe the continent faces greater and more insidious threats than just Russia (which itself is facing the same demographic disaster). Nobody knows for certain where this is heading.

“Exuberance and bravado”, what a shameless idiot you are, save that kind of talk for your shirtless hero that you are so devoted to, the enemy that we defend ourselves from.

We Americans and our NATO allies will stand strong against your KGB leader, you can depend on it.

We can depend on you to oppose American/NATO every inch of the way, let’s hope that you quit your propaganda work if Putin actually attacks our men, and the combat starts.

That’s what I’m saying. NATO planes were used to bomb Libya after the US-enabled coup against Kaddafi failed. There was no rationale to use NATO planes to destroy Libya’s government.

Your high confidence in the continued dependability our NATO allies is admirable. I remain skeptical. Time will tell as Europe’s stresses mount.

Not admirable, merely factual.

Your devotion to advancing Putin’s goals is at least as strong as my faith that our military and our NATO allies will not submit to him, and our military alliance collapse if he attacks us, as you claim.

Putin and his draftees, are not the lions of Europe, that you try to convince us that they are.

No, it was the usual from you pro-Putin people, the same pro-Russia supporters that some of us have been having to put up with since the 60s, and some older Americans, for much longer than that.

Libya was bombed because some countries decided to bomb it. It was not a treaty obligation for any NATO member. NATO article V has only been invoked one time in history - by the USA after 9/11.

That’s what I’m saying. I was speaking against NATO and using the outrageous bombing of Libya as an example why it shouldn’t exist.

But what does NATO have to do with it? NATO treaty didn’t require member countries to participate in Libya operation and many didn’t while some non-NATO countries like for example Sweden participated.

What NATO has to do with it is NATO planes were used in the bombing.

“That’s what I’m saying. NATO planes were used to bomb Libya after the US-enabled coup against Kaddafi failed.”

LOL ! There are no such thing as “NATO planes” (except an AWACS squadron and a couple of C-17s as far as I remember). Several countries decided to remove Kaddafi and they did it. You must be nuts If you really think that wouldn't have happened If NATO hadn't existed.

“On the other side of things, NATO being used as a hammer to smash the former Yugoslavia is a big propaganda talking point in Russia these days”

Propaganda, that is... Yugos didn't need anyone to help them killing one another, they did it during WW2 and after Tito kicked the bucket It was a matter of time when they do it again.

But what does NATO have to do with it?

It was a NATO operation that used NATO resources. NATO even awarded medals to the participants.

The notion that it wasn't a NATO operation because some countries didn't participate is disingenuous at best.
