Not the same as now. The Contra’s were anti-Communist. Daniel & Humberto Ortega were Commies. They came to power in Nicaragua by gaining support from the Liberation Theology religious groups in Nicaragua.

Yes, Somoza was a dictator. But they got much worse leadership after him.

Yes, Ollie North & friends were paying for the Contra effort with illegal arms trade after the ComDems cut off funding with the Bolen Amendment. It ended soon after Eugene Hasenfus was shot down in his C-123 with Soviet SAM missle. I think they're more alike than not. The main difference is the ferocity with which the Democrats went after Republicans, as opposed to the timidity of the Republicans.

Democrats always set out to jail someone; Republicans always seem to stop short of that goal.
