Why Does McDonald’s Want to Rebrand as a ‘Progressive Burger Company’?
National Review ^ | 6/17/2015 | George Will

Posted on 06/20/2015 1:43:20 PM PDT by RightGeek

In January, McDonald’s, leaning against the winds of fashion, said kale would never replace lettuce on its burgers. In May, however, it said it will test kale in a breakfast meal (breakfast is about 25 percent of McDonald’s sales). Kale might or might not cause construction workers to turn at 6 a.m. into McDonald’s drive-through lines, where approximately two-thirds of McDonald’s customers place their orders.

McDonald’s also says its milk will soon be without artificial growth hormones, and chicken (McDonald’s sells more of it than of beef) will be free of human antibiotics. All these might be good business decisions and as socially responsible as can be. They certainly pertain to McDonald’s new mantra about being a “modern, progressive burger company,” whatever that means.

The meaning will perhaps be explained by the progressive burger company’s new spokesman, Robert Gibbs, formerly Barack Obama’s spokesman and MSNBC contributor. McDonald’s British-born CEO Steve Easterbrook clarifies things, sort of, while speaking a strange business dialect: McDonald’s will be “more progressive around our social purpose in order to deepen our relationships with communities on the issues that matter to them.”

Suppose, however, you just want a burger and fries, not social purposes and relationships? You might prefer Five Guys or Shake Shack, where the burgers taste fine even without the condiment of community uplift.

[snip]

McDonald’s, deep in an identity crisis, is awakening tardily to Ira Gershwin’s truth: The Rockies may crumble, Gibraltar may tumble, they’re only made of clay. Everything is perishable, and history is a story of vanished supremacies. Easterbrook, channeling his inner Hillary Clinton, vows to “reset” McDonald’s. Perhaps his reset will go better than hers did with Vladimir Putin.

Lose the canola oil in the fryers, which makes the fries have a bitter aftertaste. Make an honest burger with a decent patty. Be a comparative bargain as far as the competition. Keep your stores clean and your employees friendly.

I am not surprised Gibbs is behind this. One of MCD’s new ads is about the new minimum wage they are paying.

I laughed at the ad because it comes eqipped with a BS meaningless feel good slogan.

Something like “a raise in pay raises us all”. LOL

Oh really? How does that work?

Perhaps multiple reasons:

1) If they don’t, the White House will revoke their Obamacare waiver

2) They are the “bread”, as in “give them bread and circuses”. They are a huge provider of food, and the Ruling Elite needs to control them.

3) A huge part of their demographic market are African-Americans. ‘Nuff said.

4) If they don’t, the White House will turn up the regulatory heat - OSHA, EPA, ADA, SEC, IRS.

5) If they don’t, MCD could find it difficult to get financing from the banks that the Ruling Elite control.

6) They are a perfect employer for the Ruling Elite to create subsistence level jobs, with very few proportional middle-class jobs. That is the goal - eliminate the middle class.

The hipster commercials are really annoying and frankly embarrassing.
They are trying so hard that it just comes off creepy.
Rabble Rabble.

Ray Kroc seemed to me always to be a very Conservative man, the same could not be said for his widow or the daughters who are very liberal indeed. McD’s took a hard turn to the left upon Ray’s passing.

They apparently hire only from urban markets. They barely show any effort on the job. The reason why they suck is because service and qualkty is so poor the cheap menu isn’t worth it.

Serve me a decent no frills burger for 99 cents in a clean friendly store and I won’t care it’s low quality. Serve me low quality food in a dirty store run by folks who are rude and you can’t make it cheap enough to bring me in.

Remember the apple pies? The old style ones (fried, I guess) were great. Well, minus the fact that they could scald you half to death. The new pies are horrible.. I tried one a few years back and thew it out.

Real question: is beef tallow available for making fries at home, & is lard a workable substitute?

Still got my grandmother’s frie cutter; Grandma made the best fries in the world & served them with fried squirrel or rabbit which Grandpa had shot for us.

I would pick Steak N Shake over McDonald’s, but I’d pick McDonald’s over Five Guys. Five Guys is the worst burgers and their fries are terrible.

Yup! Hey, why listen to Julia Child extoll your fries when some libtard says that’s cruel to the planet. Fools, total fools. Although, Mickey D’s is still better than the horrible Burger King. What have they done to wreck their excellent product? I still can’t figure it out.

Marketing people are liberals. This is how liberals market McDonalds. They hate McDonalds, so they want to make McDonalds into something they like. So, kale, etc.

Silly George. Everyone knows conservatives don't buy hamburgers.

Naps, you walk away after buying two burgers and two fry packets at Five Guys paying what? 30 bucks???? I don’t know Steak N Shake. I buy small Wendy hamburgers for my mom and they’re not too bad.

Can't disagree with any of the 5 points.

McDonlds's is/was "too big to fail," which appears to be a corporate/government/oligarchic euphemism for being terminally ill.

They asked Michael Jordan who he would vote for. He refused to answer and explained that people in both parties buy sneakers.

Unless you are going after a specific consumer base, such as a Christian Bookstore or an Asian Grocery, you don’t want to do anything that will alienate a portion of potential consumers.

Yes. Done it. Crisco (if it is still sold - no idea) also works.

I actually found out something disturbing about McDonald’s yesterday. A McDonald’s employee revealed to me that they take a picture of you and your vehicle when you go through their drive through lane. I guess they do that to associate your order to you and your vehicle, but being a “progressive” company I also doubt that the pictures are destroyed and most likely go into a database that may be used for “progressive” purposes. McDonalds, Robert Gibbs, and the rest of the communist slime can get F’ed. I’m done with all of them.

“Meanwhile places that serve food that tastes good, and is sometimes even healthy, are doing well.”

Convenience stores are consistently out selling fast food places in food that is faster and in many cases better. I’ve been grabbing a chicken biscuit at a Kangaroo store. It’s $1.59, good, crispy and filling. Lunch at about 25% of the cost at a McDonald’s. (I pack my own drinks.)

I couldn’t find the article stating the percentages of change in gas station food vs. fast food restaurants, but here is a related article. (This guy’s operation is much more elaborate than the ones I’ve seen. Mostly it’s pizza or chicken.)
