symbol of slavery? I thought the stars and bars were so that the newly formed CSA wouldn’t shoot the hell out of each other upon meeting engagements early in the war.

The "Stars and Bars" (shown in the reply below yours) is what caused the confusion on the battlefield. Hence the creation of the Confederate Battle Flag incorporating the St. Andrew's Cross.

The Confederate Battle Flag is not the Stars and Bars.

The Stars and Bars is the nickname of the official flag of the CSA.
