Liberals are still getting the South all wrong
New York Post ^ | 6/23/15 | Jonah Goldberg

‘Lots of folks expected us to do something strange and break out in a riot. Well, they just don’t know us,” the Rev. Norvel Goff told the packed, multiracial congregation of Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC, on Sunday.

It was the first service since the horrific slaughter of nine innocent souls by a racist fanatic.

Not being a Christian, I can only marvel at the dignity and courage of the victims’ relatives who forgave the shooter. If I could ever manage such a thing, it would probably take me decades. It took them little more than a day.

Less shocking, but almost as uplifting, was the conduct of the broader Charleston community, which has been unified and dignified, despite the expectations of some in the media — and the accused gunman, who’d singled out Charleston because of its success at racial integration.

And this points to Goff being right, not just about Charleston but about the South in general.

There are few subjects that ignite more casual, uninformed bigotry and condescension from elites in this nation than Dixie.

That is so true. The people up here in the NYC Metro area are so ignorant about this and aren't the least bit shy about showing it.

Liberals are still getting the South all wrong

It doesn't matter if they get it wrong, so long as they get it OUT.

Because the sheep will believe whatever the Left tells them.

If they think the south is so bad, and racist, then why are northern blacks relocating here by the thousands?

We’re not going to leave, and we’re not going to shut up and ignore our heritage and culture.

NYC still bases their view of southerners on the book, Tobacco Road”.

It’s hot down here, but we’re way-cooler than any northern liberal.

I can tell you about Dixie. I moved South from northern New England. My rented house in the subdivision was like a home within a home. The neighbors were, “Anything we can do for you? Anything your children need?”

That is Dixie.

Dixie practices Christianity.

Yet they come and relocate here by the thousands every year.

The Republicans tolerate us racist southern sympathizers as long as we vote for the approved Republican candidates

The Democrats tolerate blacks as long as they vote for the approved Democrat candidates.

Works pretty well until one or the other jumps over the line and votes for the wrong candidate.

Of course the Republicans are known as the Stupid Party because they are a lot quicker to jettison their voters than the Democrats..

I was working with a girl who moved here from Penn. because there were no jobs up there and she says to me......

‘You people have a church on every corner down here, don’t you.’

I was thinking ‘B!+<#, you need to take your yankee @$$ back up north where you came from.’

but, my Southern manners kicked in and I said.....

‘Yes sweetie, there are plenty for you to choose from, bless your heart.’

The history of bigotry and racism in the South is really the history of the Democratic Party maintaining political control in the South. The Democrats whipped up race hatred to stay in charge. Once they lost power, bigotry and racism, as a significant force in the South, went away. Is there some left? Sure. But more and more, as the evil legacy of Democrat institutional racism fades away, its only cranks who cling to it. Now you are more likely to find race hatred in urban, Northern cities (and Southern urban environments for that matter) and guess what? Democrats are in charge in those areas. One thing that has never changed is that Democrats use race hatred to gain and stay in power.

You're secret's safe with me. But if I told them, they wouldn't believe me anyway. They already know everything, just ask them.

yes - i do worry about the South being “yank-ified” by those who try to remake it in that image. love those who appreciate its culture, pace of life and graciousness. so glad i grew up where i did.

This is all an attempt to divide. The GOP is making inroads in the north so the democrats are trying to create a north/south issue.

As the left works to remove all reminders of the civil war one has to wonder...

If we ‘forget’ this slice of our history, what do we gain?

The cliché is we will be doomed to repeat it.

One has to wonder if the progressive meme of victimhood, reparations, etc., why this sudden move to remove it?

My daughter recently moved to Texas.
She told me that neighbors came to help them unpack and take their stuff into the house they just bought.
Neighbors came with food and friendship, so they wouldn’t have to run out for burgers and fries.
Neighbors even held a Texas Barbecue the first weekend they were there, so that they could meet everyone in the neighborhood.
This is something that would be unheard of in New York.
Dixie is another word for friendship.

Blogger Glenn Reynolds noted that when the South was solidly Democratic, we got “Gone With the Wind” nostalgia. Now that it’s profoundly less racist, but also less useful to Democrats, it’s the enemy of all that is decent and good.

Excellent point.
