Alabama Gov. Bentley removes Confederate flags from Capitol grounds

On the order of Gov. Robert Bentley, the Confederate battle flag which stands at the foot of the confederate memorial on the state Capitol grounds was taken down this morning.

Two workers came out of the Capitol building about 8:20 a.m. and with no fanfare quickly and quietly took the flag down. They declined to answer questions.

Moments later Gov. Bentley emerged from the Capitol on his way to an appearance in Hackleburg. Asked if he had ordered the flag taken down, the governor said, "Yes I did."

Asked his reasons for taking it down and if it included what happened in Charleston last week, the governor said, "Yes, partially this is about that. This is the right thing to do. We are facing some major issues in this state regarding the budget and other matters that we need to deal with. This had the potential to become a major distraction as we go forward. I have taxes to raise, we have work to do. And it was my decision that the flag needed to come down."

I am in Montgomery right now. Did you know the state of Alabama has a tourist campaign called "Montgomery, the cradle of the Confederacy"?

There are historical markers and signs on the roads here, for goodness sakes, and yes, they have Confederate flags on them.

So far, the signs are still up...

The whole thing is a diversion, as so many have already said.

With RINO Bentley as governor all these state markers will come down. When the people of Alabama elected this idiot over Roy Moore I knew they had lost their collective minds. He also caved on queer marriage, so caving on his state’s heritage is small potatoes for him.

That is exactly how I feel. Knee jerk, useless reactions

I call it: 'Feel good, do nothing liberalism'.

The left feels like their having a huge impact. Railing against symbolism rather than substance is easier. And causes their brain to release endorphins, and to most liberally inclined robots - feeling good about oneself due to some percieved good being done is all that matters.

Facts and reality remain unimportant factors in this equation.

the “don’t tread on me” flag

Its proper name is the Gadsden flag.

Here in VA, I recall the Sons of the Confederacy display a large Confederate Battle Flag right by I-95, south of Richmond and, predictably, the carpet baggers, libs and dish!ts’ heads explode...*giggle*

If we are going to ban the Confederate Flag as a symbol of slavery, then to be consistent, we have to ban the Stars and Stripes too.

It flew over slavery and slave transporting ships for much, much longer than any flag of the Confederacy. If the logic is that the flag flew over slave-owning lands, then the Stars and Stripes has to go, as well.

Heck, even the Ku Klux Klan flew the Stars and Stripes in their rallies...

If we go down that road, we will continue to be lopsided in our views, unaware of our own history.

So What's next? Are they going to take down the Flag of the United States too?

By capitulating because an evil nutjob like Dylann Roof slaughtered 9 innocent black Christians, aren't we providing incentive for the next nutjob to do something similar?

I am sympathetic to the view of black Americans who see that flag as a symbol of the state which fought to keep their ancestors in chains.

But once you start selectively censoring your own history like this you are on a very slippery slope.

And frankly, if you are a black American, freed from slavery, with all of the Constitutional freedoms, rights and opportunities that this nation provides, I don’t know how you can expend that much emotion or mental energy on the flag of an extinct entity.

Hey, let’s ban Budweiser and Seagram’s and Gold’s Gym (he was wearing their T-shirt) and dig up everything he ever bought.
