A lawmaker in the Leningrad region outside the city of St. Petersburg has appealed to the descendants of the Romanov royal family to return to Russia, saying their presence would help unify the country and restore its might, media reports said.
In letters to Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna Romanova in Spain and Prince Dmitry Romanovich Romanov in Denmark, both of whom claim to be the head of the house of Romanov, regional lawmaker Vladimir Petrov argued that the return of the descendants of the last Russian autocrat to their historical homeland would help smooth out the political contradictions inside the country, which have been left over from the moment of the [Bolshevik] October revolution, and would become a symbol of restoring the spiritual might of Russia's people, Izvestia reported Tuesday.
At the present time, a difficult process is under way in restoring Russia's might and of returning its international influence, Petrov said in the letter, Izvestia reported. I am certain that during such an important historical moment, members of the Romanov imperial house cannot remain aside from the processes that are going on in Russia. РЕКЛАМА
The lawmaker also proposed designating a tsarist-era palace outside St. Petersburg or in Crimea as the Romanovs' official residence, adding that his local legislature plans to draft a bill granting a special status to the royal family's descendants, the report said.

They’ve already got a czar...he just doesn’t call himself one.
Vlad Putin would be happy to play Vizer, or Prime Minester as long as he held all the power.
At last! Now they no longer have to work at the Automat.
“Sorry about that whole mass murder thing. I’m sure your next stay will be enjoyable.”
There were only 3 good Romanovs and 1 was not a blood Romanov: Peter the Great, Catherine, and Alexander II.
“Sorry about that little misunderstanding in the basement. What the Bolsheviks said was ‘send them a fruit basket’ but what we heard was ‘shoot the family and bayonet the kids’. It could have happened to anyone.”
“Sorry about that little misunderstanding in the basement. What the Bolsheviks said was send them a fruit basket but what we heard was shoot the family and bayonet the kids.”
And Tatiana’s little dog, too!
I doubt Putin would oppose it.
This has been floating around for several days now.
A “return of the Tsar” into a ceremonial position would give Russia something it is lacking right now, a solid national identity, and National CONTINUITY.
The Communists destroyed a lot of Russia’s history.
“The Communists destroyed a lot of Russias history.”
Just what the Democrats are trying to do here.
I thought that they had killed them all.
They killed the immediate family and a large number of the extended. But some escaped.
Vlad might see this as another tool to restore Russian greatness. I could see him doing a Franco - take a young heir to the throne, train him, and make him successor as head of state. Of course, it didn’t work out that well in Spain.
Putinism surely has this component: blending together the unblendable: the Russian Empire and the Soviet Occupation Government in Russia. It looks, moreover, that Her Highness is rather coyly playing along, visiting Russia often, appearing in media events and generally cultivating ties with the governing elite.
Given the obvious fact that the last time Russia had a legitimate government was under Nicholas II and endured nothing but misery since, monarchist sentiment in Russia is strong, and people of every caliber find ways to cater to it. Unfortunately, there is little understanding what monarchy really is and how it could be restored.
Russia had over a million Prince and Princesses.
Unlike the British royalty where the only people who can pass the title of prince and princess to their children is the Monarch in Russia the title was handed down to every legitimate offspring who then passed it on to their offspring.
Right - haven’t dozens of people claimed to be they?
