Should We Impeach Chief Justice John Roberts?
the Nation ^ | 11/19/14 | William Greider

Posted on 06/25/2015 12:47:06 PM PDT by illiac

Republicans like to talk about impeaching President Obama, but there is a far more deserving candidate for impeachment—Chief Justice John Roberts of the Supreme Court. While the Republicans in Congress have blocked Democrats from enacting much of substance, the GOP majority in control of the Court has been effectively legislating on its own, following an agenda neatly aligned with their conservative party. Step by step, the five right-wing justices are transforming the terms of the American political system—including the Constitution.

They empowered “dark money” in politics and produced the $4 billion by-election of 2014. They assigned spiritual values to soulless corporations who thus gained First Amendment protection of free speech and religion. The justices effectively gutted the Voting Rights Act of 1965, even as they allowed state governments to create new obstacles for minority voting. The High Court made it okay to take guns to church and more difficult to keep guns from dangerous people. It rendered a series of decisions that collectively shifted political power from the many to the few.

This power grab by the unelected—and supposedly non-partisan—justices has already produced a historic rewrite of America democracy. But it was done by blatantly usurping the decision-making authority that belongs to the elected government in Congress and the executive branch. The Republican justices are not finished with their undeclared revolution. They will continue unless and until people rise up and stop them.

>> > the problem is that the corrupt, RINO-controlled Senate will probably not remove Roberts from office even if the House impeaches him. <<

Let's say the Senate indeed opts to remove Roberts from office and 2/3rds of the Senate convicts him.

What judge appointed by President Obama to fill Robert's vacant seat will be an improvement?

the best example of what’s happening can be found in ‘Captain America: Winter Soldier’... but instead of hydra and shield, think progressives and the US govt
Nice analogy. Works for me. Now all we need to find is a Captain America...

“Now is not the time for silly fantasy.”

Barring truly drastic steps, you’re correct.

IF, IF an ACTUAL Republican gets elected next year, job #1 needs to be to get a couple SCOTUS Injustices to retire and replace them with Scalia/Thomas/Alito clones.

Enough with “play by the rules because that’s what ladies and gentlemen do” and “Old Country Buffet is running a 2-4-1 special if you get in before 10 am” mentality that the GOP has and start fighting, ‘cause this IS a war.

Yep. Also impeach the rest of the f*cks who voted the same. Obviously they can neither read the plain letter of the law nor the Constitution of the United States.

Lot of luck, though, with the Uniparty in control of the House and Senate. Nobody in that corrupt $h!thole city on the Potomac could care less about any of this except how it lines their own pockets and promotes their own power agendas.

We might as well change our name to "Norte Mexico".

Yes, if we are lucky to get the White House, keep the sick Senate and House.

Completely ridiculous. They cannot impeach due to a dislike for a decision. That is the most ridiculous thing I have heard. I doubt even Cruz would vote for impeachment for this. Now the only thing I find troubling is the fact that the liberals never side with the conservatives....EVER! Why is that?

America, as it was founded, is finished.

Why it seems like that statement is said about weekly around here....however, we are still here. I think the ruling stinks but until it changes we can’t do a thing. Complaining is fine but the whole America is over nonsense is just that nonsense.

I can think of a more appropriate punishment for a traitor.

It may have to come to that

"What judge appointed by President Obama to fill Robert's vacant seat will be an improvement? "

Thats a good question.

An impeachment of Justice Roberts would probably open the eyes of a bunch of low-information voters to widespread federal government corruption, not that they would necessarily care. But if corrupt senators perceived that they would have to remove Roberts from bench in order to get reelected then they just might do so.

And then there’s the question if such an impeachment and removal from office should happen before or after the ’16 elections if the job can be done before the elections anyway. I don’t remember how long it took the House to impeach Clinton. And then there would be further delay if the Senate actually did its job and seriously considered removing Roberts.

So next president might have actually have the job of nominating a hypothetically impeached Roberts.

Again, that’s a good question.

Greider is a leftwing lunatic and the Nation is the journal of choice for leftwing lunatics.

They should be pretty happy with Roberts after today.

A congress with cojones (not going to happen anytime soon) or a particularly bold state government could declare that they will not abide by any SCOTUS decision where the court engages in legislating from the bench, which is far beyond the court's enumerated powers; that the court may pass on the constitutionality of legislation written by congress, but may not rewrite that legislation to its own specifications on its own whim.

It would inaugurate a second Nullification Crisis, but at this point I don't see any other solution beyond armed insurrection against an unconstitutional tyranny, which seems as of today fully justified.

Hang him from the nearest tree. We have ignored traitorous acts for far too long. It’s time to hold the morons on our payroll responsible.

“Not while Obama is making the appointments.”

You are right, the Republican presidents make great appointments:
Eisenhower - Earl Warren
Nixon - Harry Blackman
Ford - John Paul Stevens
Reagan - Anthony Kennedy
George H.W. Bush - David Souter
George W. Bush - John Roberts and tried to give us Harriet Miers

Clearly we can trust Republicans to put strict constructionists on the bench.

Not while a Democrat is President. I do think he needs to be questioned as to how in hell he thought this was Constitutional.

IMHO, Anthony Kennedy will be retiring soon, as will Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

I don’t know what his deal is, but I believe it’s intelligence related more than anything else.

In time it may be proven to be more than that, but this is legislating from the bench.
