THE CHAMBER MUSIC OF LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN

String Quartet in E minor, Op. 59/2

Beethoven liked to contrast the individual pieces of a set, and this quartet is quite different from its partner. The opening “allegro” in 6/8 time starts with two slashing chords, a theme that is stated in E minor, stops, then stated in F. Beethoven uses his stop-and-start technique brilliantly, making those pauses a critical part of the work. The second subject in G Major is ebullient. The exposition is repeated. The development is compact, and he returns to E minor before the actual recap, thus making a seamless transition. The second subject appears in the correct key of E Major. In the coda, the first subject is stated without the pauses, becomes passionate, and then sinks into silence.

The second movement is marked “molto adagio, si tratta questo pezzo con molto di sentimento,” “very slowly with a lot of emotion,” in 4/4, E Major and is in sonata format. Lou told a friend that the tune fell into his head “when contemplating the starry sky and thinking about the music of the spheres.” This is one of his conversations with God.

The scherzo third movement turns to E minor and “allegretto,” but in a gimpy 3/4 that is broken up as one-TWO-three. The middle section, usually marked as a “trio,” this time is marked “maggiore,” and this is where he stashes his Russian theme.

Lou writes a wrong-key “presto” finale in 2/2. It’s a sonata-rondo movement in C Major that resolves into E minor, and then resolves back into C Major. This is a comic movement, and even the fugato in the development section is worthy of a belly laugh. The coda works C Major into B, D and D# majors before finding the proper E minor. In comic insolence the C Major theme returns, is sent to F, and then is frenetically settled into E minor once and for all in a mad rush at the end. It’s a Game of Keys for musical connoisseurs.
