I had a composition teacher in high school who would hand back a draft saying, “Excellent. Now cut down the length by 1/3, and don’t leave anything out.” Most first-draft writing is very inefficient, and most of what is published these days, especially on the internet, is first-draft writing. There are nationally-syndicated columnists putting out word-salad three times a week, and apparently nobody cares enough to assign them an editor.
