Once it starts, it is never ended until one side is exhausted. By your definition, once it starts, everything that follows is tolerable.

There are two types of exhaustion: physical and emotional. In the Civil War, the South surrendered only when they were physically exhausted. Same thing for Germany in WWII.

In Vietnam, we were nowhere near being physically exhausted, but the War lost its political support.

Despite the horrendous losses, the American Civil War never lost political support on either side.
