A Ramsey County deputy is on administrative leave after he was charged with hitting his canine partner, the Carlton County Sheriff's Office said. The charges are from an incident that happened early June 15 at the Black Bear Casino in Carlton. The sheriff's office says 48-year-old Brett Arthur Berry is charged with assaulting a public safety dog and animal cruelty, both misdemeanors. Berry has been a Ramsey County deputy since 1996. Black Bear security told deputies they had been called into the Cobalt Lounge to ask a man to leave. Security followed him with video and saw him return to his hotel room and exit five minutes later with his canine partner. Berry and other K-9 handlers were at the casino and hotel for training.

I don’t want to predict the outcome of this matter but does anyone want to guess what differences there would be in police response if I were to beat one of the K-9 officers vs. this cop beating the dog? Does anyone think I would be treated the same?

And by K-9 officer, I mean the four-legged variety.

Some people, officers included, simply do not like dogs. Maybe they don’t trust the animal, don’t think it’s really needed, lack the patience, or don’t want the added responsibility. I am asking someone who may know. Does an officer have a choice whether they use an animal? Or are those decisions part and parcel of the job description? The rule book says in this circumstance you WILL use a trained dog.

Why isn't he charged with assaulting a police officer, as we would be?

Maybe he was trying to have sex with the dog prior to marriage? Obama and this administration would approve of the action.

My daughter’s first husband is a police officer and had a police dog. I saw him treat his dog much worse than what the guy in this video does. I’m sure this guy beats on his dog all the time.

As an aside, before she married the police officer, I had an epiphany about him the second time I met him and took her aside and told her, “You know, he’s mean.” She responded in a snotty voice, “Well, he’s not mean to me.” Needless to say, she learned her lesson during that two year marriage.

Only a POS abuses an animal. I repeat a POS. I once threatened to kill a guy who I saw abusing a dog. Later that week the Bassett Hound miraculously jumped a 6ft fence and escaped in the middle of the night and was never seen again. Hmmmmm! 6ft fence. Somebody told me later he was spotted up in the Mountains with a real nice family happy as a clam. :-)

Disgusting. He should be in prison for assaulting a police office. Let the inmates issue more justice.

I thought that would be assaulting an officer. Seems that is what they charge folks with if they harm the dog that’s sicced on them.
