Can't speak for how Trump heard it, but IIRC, I read about Obama's remarks in the press, and the press report didn't voice any disapproval of Obama's remark.
Trump is noticing the same thing, that the press is not voicing disapproval of Obama's labelling some immigrants as gang-bangers, while it is simultaneously excoriating Trump for labelling some immigrants as gang-bangers.
The reason is obvious. 0 is like god to the media. 0 can do no wrong. 0 is a redistributionist and a marxist.

You did not answer. You said a liberal called out a red flag on the term “gang-banger”. Where/when did that happen? Which liberal did it?
Not sure but I assume API or local reporter was where it originated. It might have originated from a conservative reporter and if so kudos.
In this current context the reference to ‘gang-banger’ was used by Obama and called out by Trump. Nothing childish about that.
Trump needs his Twitter privileges taken away for a week or so.
