First how did Trump hear about the “gang-banger” thing if someone in the leftist-sphere did not voice disapproval and second it seems like a childish attempt to shift the attention away. He’d be better off letting others make such points for him.
Can't speak for how Trump heard it, but IIRC, I read about Obama's remarks in the press, and the press report didn't voice any disapproval of Obama's remark.
Trump is noticing the same thing, that the press is not voicing disapproval of Obama's labelling some immigrants as gang-bangers, while it is simultaneously excoriating Trump for labelling some immigrants as gang-bangers.

He’s pointing out the hypocrisy of the media. I think that was the end game from the beginning. He set the trap and they fell right into it. Actually killed two birds; demonstrated the hypocrisy of the press, and reminded every one again about a really dumb statement Obonehead uttered.
