YOUGOV Poll: Most approve of last week's Supreme Court decisions
YOUGOV ^ | 07/03/2015

Most Americans back the Supreme Court's decisions to legalize same sex marriage and to protect federal exchange subsidies

Americans approve of the two major decisions made by the Supreme Court last week, but they continue to view the two issues differently: there is majority support for a national right to same-sex marriage, but Americans in the latest Economist/YouGov Poll are still not convinced that the Affordable Care Act is working or is the right thing for the country.

Americans support the Court’s decision in King v. Burwell that those who purchased health insurance on the federal exchange could still receive federal subsidies, despite the wording in one section of the law that restricted those subsidies to insurance purchased on “State” exchanges. But just about four in ten continue to judge Obamacare as a failure, and only 28% call it a success. And while in the last year the percentage wanting to keep or expand the law has been generally larger than the percentage wanting to repeal it, there will continue to be attempts to overturn or de-fund the law.

Four in ten overall, and three-quarters of Republicans would support those efforts to de-fund the program. Nearly half think that the intense battles to eliminate the law have been worth it, even though the ACA so far has survived two appeals to the Supreme Court.

I wonder about all these polls showing majority support for homosexual marriage. If there were a groundswell of support for homosexual marriage, state after state would have voted to allow it, rather than a handful of states voting to allow, most states voting against, and many states having homosexual marriage only because it was imposed by court order.

And as far as approving of the decision, its possible for someone to be in favor of homosexual marriage as a matter of social policy but also observe that the legal reasoning for the decision was half baked.

I have been thinking about those who say they are considering moving to a foreign country, and I have had little respect for that idea. Polls like this, however, make it clear that we are already living in a foreign land.

RE: have been thinking about those who say they are considering moving to a foreign country,

What makes these folks think that the foreign country of their choice hasn’t gone ahead of the US on these two issues?

Heck, the USA is only playing catch-up...

“Yougov” was the very same polling firm that predicted *the day before Britain's election last May* that “Red Ed” Milliband would be Prime Minister of Britain. But instead, the Tory Party *increased* their numbers in Parliament and “Red Ed” resigned in disgrace the next day.

And considering that the left has defined opposition to homosexual marriage as bigoted and hateful and all that, are some people giving the politically correct answer to a survey on homosexual marriage, as opposed to saying what they truly believe on the issue??? Is there an intimidation factor at work in public opinion polls???

I believe it was one of the questions posed by Scalia during the arguments of the case. If public opinion has swung so much in favor of gay marriage, why not let it come about by normal means?

I really think Ted Cruz’s idea of retention elections have merit with one minor adjustment. Let the state legislatures vote to retain or remove supreme court justices.

It would certainly return some of the power to the states.

The SCOTUS might not be so willing to step on state powers if the states have the power to eliminate them.

We lost the propaganda war a long time ago by refusing to play hardball with these fascists.

We gallantly follow Marquess of Queensberry rules and they eye gouge. This is a dirty street fight, not a boxing match that the YMCA.
