Workforce to shrink as baby boomers retire, birth rates fall
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review ^ | June 27, 2015 | Natasha Lindstrom

It's a national dilemma: Birth rates rose slightly in 2014 but are not high enough to sustain population levels, just as employers brace for the largest generation ever to retire in droves.

The oldest of 75 million baby boomers — born between 1946 and 1964 — turn 69 this year.

It's sometimes dirty, un-airconditioned, with awful hours, and every holiday is a mandatory work day to do down time maintenance and projects.

The last guy we hired is remembered by the two foot prints left on the concrete floor where he was standing when he ran a metal fish tape pulling wires and happened across two legs of live 2300 Volts.

I’m a retired industrial maintenance machinist. The problem as I see it is there are very little in the way of Industrial Arts education. most Technical schools were closed down because the education system wanted to force as many people as possible into Colleges and Universities. The other is employers do not want to pay high enough wages to give incentive to be a skilled laborer. There are other things too such as few young people work on cars or build their own stereos anymore so they have very little tool time growing up. Fortunately my grandson is very handy with both mechanics and electrical and is currently studying robotics.

Not to worry, the Blacks and Hispanics are working overtime in the procreation department. They fit it in between murdering, burglarizing, raping, carjacking, drug dealing, etc. They must be supermen to be able to screw after all that!

yep, our betters KNOW what's good for us.....this cockamamie SS racket plus the unsustainable govt pension system is just dying to have an influx of illegals to swell our population...

I guess its our fault....should have had more babies and got our kids to have more....now, its a moot point...

but the elites probably figured the illegals would be like the Poles, the Germans, the Italians, the Irish, etc who came to our shores and really built a nation thru hard work and a good work ethic...

some of these illegals will drain more in SS and welfare than they'll give back, then what do we do?

“You are correct. SS cannot sustain without millions of illegal immigrants”

Not even then. I trully believe that a large percentage want to stay on the underground economy. Goverment benies, work under the table and send as much cash back to Mexico as possible. They aren’t going to pay no stinkin State or SS tax. Cali welcomes them with open arms. 12% of the population, 34% of the wefare recipients. You have to be willingly trying to get to that kind of number. The downward spiral continues for SS. No if ands or buts, at age 62 I’m starting and fully expect for severe reductions if not a total collapse of system before I expire. Look for 401k, savings, and IRA haircuts via Govermint fiat like they are proposing in Greece as well.

This article is all about forwarding the lies in the Narrative of the Obama job “miracle” - that the labor force is smaller by choice.

This week, Stockman released these two summary facts:

* “the number of non-farm labor hours utilized during the most recent quarter was only 1% higher than in the spring of 2000”

* “The number of breadwinner jobs—–full-time positions in energy and mining, construction, manufacturing, the white collar professions, business management and services, information technology, transportation/distribution and finance, insurance and real estate—-is still 1.7 million below the level of December 2007; in fact, it is still lower than it was at the turn of the century”

The currency de-valuation is why so many people at or beyond retirement age are still working; there is no way for many to survive on SS and retirement funds (if they have any). Devaluation is one angle of attack to keep SS solvent; another is simply pushing the retirement age to 80 (and they are working on that already).

I suspect SS payments will be means-adjusted in the future (rather than based on your contributions); I work with many childless Americans who reduce their current income tax burden with retirement plan contributions, and I fear that will bite them in the arses when they retire.

I work with a woman who complained that her mother had to return to work because SS was inadequate; when I asked what work her mother did, she responded (without a trace of irony) that she babysat for cash. When I asked what work she was doing now, the reply was that she was doing more of the same...

“As an industrial electrician of 30 years now, our department can’t even find a qualified candidate to fill the four open spots we have.”

Companies used to train people. They rarely do anymore. They expect the perfect person with exactly the perfect qualifications to magically appear somehow.

“SS cannot sustain without millions of illegal immigrants.”

Actually, they rarely pay in and they get to bring over their elderly family members to collect on SS. Illegal aliens KILL Social Security.

Last time I changed jobs was because my wife took a relocation offer. In my interview for my "new job" they asked if I was hands on familiar with their systems and equipment? I told them "I had blown up and destroyed everything out there in their plant at least once during my career", so I'm pretty much ok with it.

I was immediately hired.

They weren’t even built for a stable/static population; they are basically pyramid schemes designed for a growing pool of contributors. The whole debt economy is the same; without a growing pool of borrowers eventually the bottom falls out (as it did here).

"Americans who reduce their current income tax burden with retirement plan contributions, and I fear that will bite them in the arses when they retire."

Hey........That's me you're talking about. Although I have three kids. I have saved the maximum every year, as has my wife, in 401K Contributions for 33 years now.

Thanks for the " great job taking care of your own needs" talk.

OK; great job taking care of your own needs. I have children as well, but stopped my 401K contributions because I’d be putting groceries on credit cards. My retirement age has already been pushed back to 67, and I’m almost a quarter of a century away from reaching that. Rather than bemoan my lack of retirement savings, I focus on paying my current bills and reducing my debts; I firmly believe any savings would have been held against me at retirement. In fact, I believe they would also be held against my children in seeking any financial aid for college; this socialism pervades everywhere, and the race-based formulas must eventually fall in court (when Hispanics get 75% of college seats, leaving nothing for the perpetual victims, black Americans).

Did you not see the warning about means adjustment? When politicians openly say Social Security should not be viewed as a retirement plan but instead as a supplement, what do you think they intend to do?

Total BS. More older people are working than ever before because they need the money. The work force is shrinking because people are not working. 42% Unemployment and the work force is shrinking? No, what is shrinking are the number of people who will work. This is what happens when you put a record number of people on welfare...they stop working!

The headline may be a bit misleading. When the baby boomers retire, it will make room for the unemployed later generations.

If you were wondering why both parties embrace immigration (no fence agendas, no real fights, etc)...this is the basic reason. The system for social security and taxes....wasn’t built for a declining population.

...

Then what about all the people who have given up and left the workforce?

Corrupt politicians, which is most of them, want to flood the country with people who will vote for corrupt government.

We already have more than enough workers.

I often wonder how Social Security can collapse but you never hear of any welfare program collapses. Seems to me the first programs to go should be those that weren’t funded by our own contributions.

All good points there. I'm not sure if this number is accurate, but if it is, then it's pretty staggering:

I heard a radio interview a few months ago when the topic of "immigration amnesty" came up. The guy they were interviewing brought up the 1986 amnesty law, and cited a statistic that only 25%-30% of the eligible illegal immigrants in 1986 even took advantage of the amnesty they were being offered.

It's kind of pathetic when a Mexican with little or no education who crosses the border illegally and "lives in the shadows" is the one who figures out that a man with no Social Security number, no bank account, etc. has more freedom in this country than most Americans.
