Dear flag fighters: that rainbow used to mean something different too

As the debate over the Confederate Battle Flag continues to occupy the interest of the media we are constantly reminded of precisely who is “right” and who is on the wrong side of history. Listening to the talking heads on cable news you’d be tempted to think that, much like climate change, the social science is settled. Everyone is onboard for tearing the hated flag down and if you don’t agree you are part of a tiny group of racist dead enders, clutching your guns and your bibles in some remote cave in the Ozarks. Presidential candidates and Republican Party leaders (who clearly watch too much TV) have been rushing to join the call for packing the flag off to a dark corner of a museum. Stores are yanking flag merchandise off the shelves and even Bubba Watson is painting over the symbol on the General Lee.

This has quickly become just one of those things that everybody knows. Of course, when you actually go and poll Americans on the subject, it turns out that “everybody” is a lot smaller number than you may have thought.

Fifty-seven percent of Americans said they see the flag as evoking Southern pride in the CNN/ORC poll released Thursday, compared to 33 percent who believe it is racist. Those numbers show little movement since a similar poll from 2000.

Black and white Americans have very different views on whether the flag is a symbol of pride or a symbol of hate. Two-thirds of whites believe the flag represents Southern pride, while only 28 percent believe it has any ties to racism.

That perspective is the opposite among blacks — 72 percent believe the flag is a symbol of racism.

The majority of Americans, both black and white, believe that the flag should be removed from all government property except for museums.

So thing are never quite as clear as you think, are they? And the meanings of various symbols are different, depending who you ask, and they can even change over time. The Confederate Flag is indeed a symbol of southern pride to many folks even though it’s been used for other purposes in the past. But there’s another symbol which is showing up on a regular basis these days too. It’s the rainbow flag and the general Rainbowifying of anything and everything since the Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges. Twitter icons have been bathed in rainbows, rainbow flags are being raised across the land and even the White House went rainbow for one night.

I bring this up partly because the intersection between those wanting to tear down the Confederate Flag and those hoisting the rainbow banner is almost total. A venn diagram of the two groups would have very little uncovered surface area. And we all know what the rainbow stands for, right? Gay marriage, baby! Gay rights across the land! It’s a victory for the entire nation!

But much like the Confederate Flag, the rainbow didn’t always stand for The Gay. This may come as a shock to some of you, but for a very long time it had a rather distinctly different meaning.

And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: 13 I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. 14 And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud, 15 and I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth. 17 And God said unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth.

My apologies if the source material for that quote is unfamiliar to some of you, but trust me… you can still find copies near where you live in essentially every town in America.

You may be sensing some of the irony in all of this shifting symbolism by this point. Those waving rainbow colors stand for gay marriage. Everybody knows it. And yet, for thousands of years, they represented the covenant between God and His creation, as well as a reminder of the rather stiff punishment He once handed down for not keeping His laws. That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t fly the rainbow flag if you wish. Help yourself. But it might also serve as a brief reminder that symbols can mean different things to different people and the meanings of some of those symbols can expand and evolve over time. And with that in mind, as you climb up flag poles and vandalize monuments, perhaps you could recall another quote from that obscure source material I cited above.

Judge not, that ye be not judged.

Just some food for thought over the holiday weekend.

...and the homo-fascists are re-defining the word “gay” to hide their evil, satanic lifestyle.

Why do you think that the image of a rainbow was chosen by the activists?

It’s pretty clear to me that it was to poke a finger in the eye of the religious right and God.

I'd love to see an age breakdown of those two groups. What percent of that 33% are 'under 25 oatmeal for brains?'

It is poetic that they use an image associated with God’s judgment and with “the days of Noah.”

What is the reason given for only having six colors in the pride flag instead of seven in a real rainbow, and which color is missing?

Just as an aside. The New York State National Guard’s Sixty-ninth division has the rainbow as their shoulder patch. That guard unit fought as far back as the War of Secession.

I think its sort of a copy of Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow Coalition from the 1980s. The rainbow reference implied people of all races, colors, creeds, blah, blah were included. I think that resonated with the gay movement, and they co-opted it....almost as a jab to the Rats (who as recently as 10 years ago were opposed to gay marriage)...to say ‘let us in’.

If they want to take a jab at religion, they do it...but are alot less subtle. I really think they overlooked the biblical roots of the rainbow.

Oh, yes - I'm sure every poor southern boy and Yankee alike began their last day on earth only with the thought that "slavery" and "racial hate" is the reason why they are there at that moment, sitting in the mud, waiting to die.

There's a reason why schools don't teach history and civics anymore.

As of today, I still haven't heard any talking head talk about the 650,000 Americans who died fighting Mr. Lincoln's little war - 650.000 Americans - by today's population numbers, that rounds out to 7 million Americans. Quite a price, indeed

Imho, 27 percent of the population has oatmeal for brains. That number consistently shows up in polls about whether or jot the moon landing was faked, 9-11 was an inside job, Katrina was made with a weather machine, etc. Its uncanny.

God works in mysterious ways. The joke is on the homos. Their rainbow flag is not a rainbow. Their flag has SIX colors (in the Bible six represents man)- God’s rainbow has SEVEN colors - (in the Bible seven represents God’s completion).

THEIR RAINBOW IS A FAKE, JUST AS THEY ARE IN GOD’S PLAN FOR A MAN AND WOMAN TO BE COMPLETION.

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that a group who would turn heterosexual sex on it’s head, would be timid about twisting a rainbow or the word gay.

Each has commonality with the other.

These are each perversions.

And now the federal government has brought perversion main stream.

I have never been a person who thought homosexuals should be singled out. I was pretty much a live and let live guy. Then they said all they wanted was to be able to come out of the closet, and by golly that was a perversion too.

They didn’t just want to come out of the closet. They wanted to disrupt the solemnity of heterosexual marriage.

They also wanted to foist off homosexual indoctrination on our nation’s children in kindergarten. Heterosexuals don’t even do that. This was new ground in several very destructive ways.

What is the common denominator in all this?

Homosexuality
Rainbows
Gay
Just wanting to be able to come out of the closet
Marriage
Children

Perversion and nothing else...

Now you have two grown men able to marry and adopt little boys.

Here are two people who couldn’t control their perverted sexual urges, put in charge of raising a vulnerable child.

You wouldn’t make this stuff up it’s so perverted.

It is interesting how the word “pride” is used by various Leftwing activist clusters. Pride is the sin which breaks the First Commandment. It says, in effect, “I am god.”

Possibly......

But I’m not so sure about that.

I am speaking about a activist leaders here, and not the rank and file gay supporters.

I became convinced of this a decade or so ago when civil unions were rejected in favor of matrimony.

Marriage under the eyes of the government is marriage in any society and is a legal contract, but matrimonial ceremonies are the purview of the church.

They are going to and have demanded matrimony and intend to force churches to give it to them through mandate.

This has already occurred in Scotland and other places in Europe and now it’s here.

What other point could they be trying to make?

They are going to regulate religion through government and law. The marriage license is not good enough. And it appears to me that the SCOTUS decision will lead to this and quickly.

So....It seems that our Republic is no longer a Republic at all and the Constitution can be ignored in favor of just one angry self victimized litigant.

If you speak with a liberal trained lawyer today, (and they are the majority) you will discover that this is the way they see the Constitution.

The so called “living document”........You simply read into it whatever meaning you choose..

Pride has been coopted by homosexuals. They have pride parades. Just as they have changed the definition of the word gay, they are changing the definition of the word pride.

I don’t believe it is applicable statistics to extrapolate the number of men killed in the US Civil War to today’s population. Tactics and strategies and survival resources change as to warfare. As an overseas vet of WWII and having a brother killed on Okinawa in WWII I see many notices of men who were killed in WWII that might have been kept alive in wars since then. I can only pray that our wounded vets living today do have a good life.
