Poway mayor explains why city had to dump 550,000 gallons of water (Too much water conservation)

The mayor of Poway is defending the city's decision to dump more than 500,000 gallons of what appeared to be perfectly good drinking water.

"I think it's a shame," said resident Helen Shelden. "I think the city should've prepared better for it."

"It was a perfect storm of conservation and heat," said Poway Mayor Steve Vaus.

Vaus said Poway residents conserved so much water -- by 45 percent in May -- that the water just sat in the Blue Crystal Reservoir. Heat eventually got to it and there was a chemical imbalance of Chloramine. Because of state regulations, Vaus told 10News the water was not safe to drink.

The amount of water released is enough to supply about four households for an entire year.

Some may wonder: Why not put it back into a lake from where it came? The answer, in short, is it would cost too much.

"If you think about it, making those hundred tanker truck runs back and forth, it just doesn't pencil out," said Vaus.

The city says it couldn't send the water through the pipelines into homes for irrigation because there's a chance someone may drink it.

From the article:

“... Heat eventually got to it and there was a chemical imbalance of Chloramine. ...”

Why haven’t other reservoirs had this problem?

So how did the concentration of chloramine in the water increase? Did the city continue to pump in a fixed volume, not taking account of greatly reduced outflows? Where will the water come from to dilipute the reservoir? Could they have gotten an exemption from the regs? Was chloramine at dangerous levels? Or at a level where a rat would have to take in 5 gallons per day instead of 10 to maybe get sick? We aren’t getting the full story.

Does this mean I can quit having the dog do the dinner dishes now?

One of the more interesting bits if info on Wikipedia is that Chloramines should be removed from water before the water is used to homebrew beer.

Obviously bad stuff.

You also need to neutralize it if you’re filling a decorative pond that has fish.

Blue Crystal Reservoir?

A reservoir is where raw untreated water is kept. It is normally chlorinated after clarification and filtration as it is pumped into the distribution network.

If they dumped 550,000 gallons of stupid from their reservoir of it, it wouldn’t even me measurable.

The author of this story first says that the water was perfectly good for drinking...but then later states that it was unfit for drinking.

Talk about your journalistic hit piece!

there was a chemical imbalance of Chloramine —

After heat got to it...

right...

Chloramine is added to water due to state regs. A little different than chlorine (more stable). Better economy for water company; worse for user.

Let’s some analysis. Concentrations, chemical reactions, etc.

“there was an imbalance” kind of like those pesky guns.

And finally “the heat” from global warming.

Great questions! Marxists lie! Marriage redefined, confederate flags and soon American flags to be eliminated, etc.

In part the water crisis in CA has been manufactured - (and/ or made worse) by Agenda 21 proponents.

This patriot has been actively fighting Agenda 21 in CA and maintains the water to northern CA was cut off. In the video directly below he mentions an El Nino is coming - hence the video about it raining on June 30 and says that the Agenda 21 proponents want people to use water ONCE A WEEK.

If anyone needs me, I’ll be outside kissing my 300’ deep water well. And then I’m going to go across the road and kiss the lake. :)

If you’ve got water, you’ve pretty much got it all. NEVER take that for granted!

I remember an interview with a woman who had made it to 100 years old. The interviewer asked, ‘What, in your lifetime, has been the best improvement in life?’ Her answer?

‘Running water in the house!’ :)

(I lived in San Diego, 1980-1982. We were in a drought back then, too. Funny how that happens when you BUILD A CITY IN A DESERT!)

South Carolina joins 8 states to challenge EPA water rule

http://www.thestate.com/news/state/south-carolina/article25829182.html

The lawsuit asks a court to strike down a new rule opponents say unlawfully expands the federal government’s regulatory reach over local streams and lands.

Snip

South Carolina joins Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Utah, West Virginia and Wisconsin in the lawsuit. Other states have filed their own challenges

Most cities use chlorine, not choramines. sorry to say, my water company uses chloramines. They are about 400 times more stable than chlorine. Unlike chlorine, which you can boil off, chloramines stay.

I’m a home brewer and yes, it must be removed if you are using municipal water for brewing. A Campden tablet (potassium metabisulfate) will remove the chloramines chemically for brewing.

This makes me wonder the effect of chloramines on our intestinal flora. There are very few studies on this.

If the chlormine level was toxic to drink then it was also too toxic to dump! Sounds like an EPA investigation to me.

All that hoopla over water for 4 measly households??? Ok, so last week the mayor should have declared a car wash day and saved the taxpayers’ dollars.

Do the chloramines interfere with fermentation or is there more to it than that?

When I paid our water bill this month I looked at last years usage vs this years. We cut our water usage by 41 percent. At first our water company was supposed to surcharge anyone using over last years amount per month. Then hubby tells me no, they changed it. Now they are putting everyone on a monthly ‘budget’. Damned if you do and damned if you don’t.

I think we could blame the state on this one. It was perfectly good drinking water than didn’t meet state standard. Kinda like drinking water from a hose.
