There are fears Melbourne's gun crime could be spiralling out of control with police data showing a 300 percent rise in firearm offences in the past five years.

Mr Iddles said the streets were more dangerous than he had ever seen.

"The homicide rate's not up but if you have ice and you have the threat of terrorism, it's more dangerous now on the street as a police officer (than) in all my time of 37 years," he said.

Data shows police find an illegal firearm in Victoria every 48 hours.

Mr Iddles said Melbourne's northwest suburbs were a particular hotspot, with a 300 percent rise in firearm discoveries and offences in the past five years.

The guns are evil.

Not the felons that have stolen and used them.

Not illegal, but damned hard to get one legally.

I’ll bet that the rise in crimes with guns is in direct correlation with the number of immigrants.

And I thought that people feel much safer once they were disarmed?

A myth.

This is my local gun shops website.

We do have some very silly restrictions, but law abiding citizens have no difficulty getting a basic gun licence for basic longarms, and you can get more advanced licences (such as handguns and semi-autos) if you are willing to do the work.

Why does having ice make things dangerous for Oz cops? Criminals want their ice? They kill for ice?
That’s cold man.

See my reply above this one. The idea that guns are banned in Australia, and that Australians are disarmed is a myth.

We do have some dumb restrictions, but it’s nowhere near that bad. There are over a million people with gun licences in Australia, and millions of guns in the hands of private citizens, with shops selling them in almost every town.

Ice is the term most commonly used in Australia for what tends to be called ‘Crystal Meth’ in some other countries. Just in case you really were wondering.

I would assume that there are any number of legacy firearms.

Fools do feel safer when they are disarmed. Many people actually do believe that the gun will cause them to shoot themselves or someone else.

There are plenty of those around as well - some correctly licenced and registered. No way of knowing how many others.

I bought a new gun this morning. It wasn’t hard at all.

Just two years ago, 9,000 guns were confiscated in New South Wales from organized crime, outlaw biker gangs, and midlevel criminals. And, the same thing happens across all of Australia. This push is to fight “out of control” gun violence prevalent there. This has happened since the ban. Criminals are smuggling guns in from overseas by the boatload to arm criminals. The can still find guns easily.

From what I have read you have to show “good cause” or “special need” to purchase a gun.
