Two Christian bakers who refused to bake a cake for a lesbian wedding have been ordered to pay $135,000 in damages by July 13 or else the state of Oregon could place a lien on their home.
Aaron and Melissa Klein, the owners of Sweet Cakes by Melissa, were punished by the states Bureau of Labor and Industry (BOLI) for unlawfully discriminating against a same-sex couple.
The Kleins, who are devout evangelical Christians, argued that baking the cake would be a violation of their religious beliefs.
The BOLI ruling ordered the mom-and-pop bakers to pay $135,000 to the lesbian couple. They were also slapped with a gag order that prohibits them from speaking publicly about their refusal to participate in or bake wedding cakes for same-sex unions.
And now - they have until July 13 to pay the damages or else face additional fines and a possible lien on their home.

What some people will do instead of simply taking their business elsewhere is bloody pathetic. There are infants out there with more maturity.
A personal lawsuit against these Torquemadas is desperately needed. But I doubt the Kleins have the funds to file.
I think I would have a cake product line. A cake with a little cross, another with a Jewish symbol, etc. Each cake and the recipe for it would always be the same. So you can buy a gay cake if you want it, little rainbow symbol, but it would, of course taste different because each cake has a specific recipe and baking process. But If you want a great tasting white cake with white frosting, it would come with a cross on it. So you either get a great tasting cake with a Christian cross on it or a “strange tasting” cake with a rainbow flag. Your choice. Sorry, no substitutions, marketers do it all the time.
The head fascist of BOLI has a name, a face, and an address. If he goes ahead with this wicked and unconstitutional plan he should be amply rewarded for his tyranny.
I would fight back too. They knew this was coming. One of their parents should already own the house and other assets.
Applying that lesson, I cede nothing. Give 'em an inch and they'll run roughshod over you.
The ‘gay’ cake would taste like caca because that would be appropriate.
There’s little difference between homosexuals and lesbians and dung beetles.
By now they should not own the house. They should have quitclaimed it to a parent.
Do you think the justice department wouldn’t somehow turn it into a federal crime if they relocated to Texas? They need to get out of the country. First people to ever FLEE the United States for religious persecution. What a story!
Behave like Ellis and burn it all on the way out.
I’m sick of homosexuals, illegal aliens and Muslims!
(Obama fits into all three categories.)
The massive left has picked homosexuals and gun control as the hill they want to die on.
No, not the first. I recall a 14 year-old persecuted by Janet Reno for alleged child molestation in a church-run daycare in Florida. The family eventually packed up and went back to the old country (Netherlands, IIRC).
It was a major case because the shrinks were coming up with some wild stories, calling them 'suppressed memories', digging this stuff out of the kids under hypnosis.
The problem is, but it’s time to take action, that while we’re rounding up the leftists and razing the White Hut our multitude of enemies will be bombing the country.
Not sure that qualifies. That’s just connected to a church, but not about the free practice of religion. It’s not like the defendant was claiming it was a matter of religious liberty to molest kids.
In this case, the defendant specifically agrees that they did what they are accused of - not bake a cake - but that they were practicing their mainstream Christian religion in doing so.
I agree there are differences, but it is all part of the same attack. Those who have been assaulting Christianity have been at it for a while, and have become more bold as time goes on. Many here speculated Reno and the plaintiffs in this case have something in common.
My reaction exactly! Why are they still in a State with a "nunyadambusiness" labor union bureaucracy that acts so tyrannically toward small, independent businesses?
$135K would buy lots of gasoline...
Normally a lien is not a forced sale. They may have a 95% mortgage, thus there is no equity to lien. Until the property is sold, the state will get nothing!
Then bathhouse barry and his ilk would see to it that they were charged with defacing currency.
The home should’ve been sold and the cash hidden a long time ago.
