rockrr: "Even worse than that is what they are agitating about regarding Nathan Bedford Forrest’s burial site IN Memphis."

You may know, Forrest is my favorite Confederate because, early in the war, he captured the unit of one of my great-grandfather's near Memphis, treated them well and released them "on parole", meaning they served time in a Union stockade until traded for captured Confederates.

Such civility didn't last long, and by war's end capture often meant a slow death by starvation, disease and/or exposure.

But my opinion is that Forrest himself survived the war because some of those he previously caught-and-released remembered that at Tupelo, Mississippi, and let him pass through their lines unmolested.
Contrast that to Stonewall Jackson's fate, from his own soldiers.

So Forrest was a leader of unusual talent.
A complex man, former slave-trader, accused of crimes at Fort Pillow, his life ended on a note of sincere reconciliation.
He and his troops deserve honor and recognition.
They represent some of the best in Southern courage, devotion and resourcefulness.

My Dad's WWII unit, the 33rd ID, started its training at Camp Forrest, in southern Tennessee, in 1942.
So our idea of honoring such Confederate leaders is not new, and I see no reason why it should change, just because tornado-force winds of political correctness are howling around our ears these days.

Being in Jackson's Corp was no picnic, the troops did make fun of him, until the lead started to fly. But they didn't shoot him on porpose. They thought it was Yankee cavalry.
