Historically, Japan has protected its home market with numerous non-tariff barriers. And stupid US trade representatives have allowed such to exist for decades. Japan has been so successful at protecting its market that foreign automakers seldom could establish a foothold and most don't try.
Japanese build cars in the USA . USA build cars in Mexico . Duh !
It’s been that way for as long as I can remember. Trump would negotiate a deal opening US autos to the Japanese market under fair trade where they would sell or not.
