RginTn,

Also see the u.s. constitution.

Primary causes of the War Between the States were:

1) excessive taxation by the North on the South.
2) unequal representation imposed by the North on the South.

If slavery was the primary cause, then why did the emancipation proclamation come far —later— than the start of the war?

If slavery was the primary cause then the timeline would’ve been :

Northern states via the Congress say: “
OK, slaves are freed, no more slavery, and this applies to —all— the states”

Southern states say to Congress:
“No way; we’re keeping our slaves; we’re seceding over this issue “

Trouble is, it didn’t happen that way.

1) yep that was cause for grievance

2) and the Southern states agreed to that to join the Union

Note that those who support the Confederate Flag mentioned repeatedly that it was about Heritage. This made me look at the Confederate Constitution. Its that Constitution which legalizes slavery.

So I will concede that yes excessive taxation was a reason for the Civil War and also Slavery as the Confederate Constitution legalized it.

Too bad about that pro-slavery clause. If it had not been in the CC, it would be conclusive proof that the Confederate flag doesn't stand for slavery.
