CHP: Santa Rosa girl, 15, found driving suspected drunken father

A Santa Rosa man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of child endangerment and other charges after he allowed his 15-year-old daughter to drive his Dodge Ram while he sat by as a drunken passenger, the CHP said.

An officer stopped the truck Sunday night around 7:30 p.m. after noticing it going about 20 mph in a 35 mph zone on Llano Road with expired registration, said Officer Jon Sloat in a news release.

He stopped the truck after it pulled into a private driveway and found that a 15-year-old was driving along with passenger Grasifedo Chavez, 35.

Chavez told the officer he was teaching his daughter to drive and that he was meeting someone at the drive they’d pulled into. But the owner of the home said they didn’t know Chavez.

The officer noticed several empty beer cans in the truck and that Chavez showed signs of intoxication, Sloat said. Chavez was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment, permitting an unlicensed driver to operate his vehicle, and providing false information to an officer. The girl was released to her mother, Sloat said.

It’s my pasture and only for a few hundred feet. I think he prefers riding back there because he likes to jump in out of slow my moving truck. I keep telling him he will hurt himself, but to no avail...

15 is waaay too young for a child to be driving! Child endangerment for this offense should carry a 15 year sentence!

Everyone I knew in high school started driving at 15. Back then we didn't have seatbelts or disc brakes.

My kids all started driving with me in the car when they were 15. Usually I wasn't passed out drunk, but as long as there is an adult in the car, it is still legal.

I think she would be eligible for a learner’s permit in California at 15 years and 6 months. The article doesn’t say if she is above or below that age.

My first wife’s dad was a drunk. He was also fond of Md crabs.

He and she went to Annapolis for crabs, and he got drunk. They lived in Fairfax, VA.

She was 12. She drove home. She got onto the beltway and missed the turnoff to Fairfax, and went around the beltway twice before finally finding her way home.

It happens! They didn’t get caught!!!

I think many may have missed my “/S” tag at the end of the post.

I have no problem with a 15 year old driving if:

They have been well trained
They are mature in all areas of life
They DO NOT drive with peers
They only drive in daylight and good weather
They only drive in light or no traffic
They understand the physics of braking and cornering
They understand the results of an automobile crash as seen in the ER
They have read a list of the students from their high school who have died in a car crash when under the age of 21.
