That was one of the Iowa class battleships brought out of mothballs.

And I seem to recall that the whole jilted-gay-lover story was greeting with some skepticism. Perhaps it was a slightly better PR story for the USN than problems with really old ammo on a really old ship.

According to Wikipedia (I know, I know) they did decide the jamming of the guns in the turret was intentional. Then they backtracked on the gay thing even though they had been questioning his ‘relationship’ with another sailor, for a couple of years. They may have backtracked on the intentional jamming, but it was likely political correctness.
