The autopsy cites a chokehold as a contributing cause of death. Forgive me if I’ll take the word of New York City’s own coroner on this detail. He saw the body.

According to the NYPD patrol guide (which is relevant to establishing the relevant duty of care), it most certainly was a chokehold. The patrol guide defines "chokehold" very broadly:

Members of the New York City Police Department will NOT use chokeholds. A chokehold shall include, but is not limited to, any pressure to the throat or windpipe, which may prevent or hinder breathing or reduce intake of air.
