--snip-- For Temple, which is in the heart of North Philadelphia, a section of the city where most students are minorities who live in poverty, the decision to go test-optional could prove key. Many students from Philadelphia's neighborhood high schools are finishing at the top of their class but have SAT scores in the 800s, putting them at a disadvantage.
"We cannot ignore the mounting evidence that standardized test scores inject socio-economic bias into the admissions and financial-aid equations," Hai-Lung Dai, Temple's provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, said last summer in announcing the change.

How do you spell ROOFIE..?
Hey, as long as da suckah WORKS, nome sayin'..?!
汉奸
Just kidding, I hate that term. I don't believe in the concept of race traitor, but Dr. Dao surely is not working in the interests of the Chinese community in doing this.
The ironic thing liberals don't understand is that they are not working in the best interests of the black community by doing and saying these things either.
For admissions purposes, Asians are classified as lily white.
How on the world is their bias if they are standardized?
I agree.
But, if the score is for two sections, it’s really not so bad, although it’s surprising if the top students are scoring in the 800’s.
Did they study for it? If you walk in and take the test cold, no matter how well you do in school, you’re not going to do so well. You have to practice hard because the questions can be tricky. You also have to build up speed.
“Many students from Philadelphia’s neighborhood high schools are finishing at the top of their class but have SAT scores in the 800s, putting them at a disadvantage.”
I would suggest that the level of education they received in those high schools put them at a bigger disadvantage.
What bothers me is not that "the top of high school classes" are at that absurdly low educational ranking as compared to honky kids, but that the others rank far lower - which is basically pre-school level. Basically, they're potty trained but not much equipped otherwise to function in a technological society.
“Translation: Screw Whitey, we don’t care how smart you are or how hard you worked.... “
Actually it’s more screw the Chinese which is ironic given this provost.
"... because that's easier than making schools actually produce competent students who know the material."
I think he meant 800s on each of the two parts, verbal and quantitative. I’ve often heard it expressed that way.
I take for granted they will just waive the writing sample. It would mean “acting white.”
And Temple will wonder why they have so many drop-outs...
Just read it again and I take it all back.
“How on the world is their bias if they are standardized?”
Believe it or not I remember as a kid learning the argument on Good Times.
The example Michael Evans used was that the question was what terms go together - cup and _______
The answer is saucer, but Michael’s friend was so poor that his family doesn’t have any saucers to go with their cups so he answered cup and table.
They’ve been pushing the socioeconomic bias Claim for 40 years at least.
They’ve been fixing it for 40 years.
It does no favor to any kid to put him in a school where he will struggle because he is in over his head.
And nonpayment of student loans.
800 SAT score = moron
That they are at the top of their class is an indictment of the system.
No, you get 400 for putting your name to the paper. Each try is scored from 200 to 800.
That's the sad thing. They won't be drop outs, they'll be pushed through with grade inflation. Just like they were in high school and no doubt junior high.
Hey as long as they can pay the big tuition dollars via unlimited student loans, it’s all good to the profs & admins.
