Democrats Want To Outlaw ‘Unfair’ Work Schedules

In the name of fairness, congressional Democrats introduced a bill Wednesday that would put significant restrictions on how employers schedule their employees.

“This bill is about basic fairness,” Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren said in a statement. “A single mom should know if her hours are being canceled before she arranges for daycare and drives halfway across town to show up at work.”

Nearly 80 lawmakers out of the House and Senate introduced the measure. The Schedules That Work Act will add restrictions on how employers can schedule their employees. If passed, it would ban employers from putting their employees on call, splitting their shifts, sending workers home with no pay, or punishing them for requesting schedule changes.

But I’m saying businesses need to get ahead of the curve on this one to AVOID sh*tty heavy handed regulations and work this out between them and the employees. As far as un-Constitutional, give me a break. When has that stopped this admin?

I don't buy that there's a lot of heavy handed regs in biz, except government regs. Most of these type situations are bars and restaurants where they try and estimate their customer load - but that's a tricky business. I was a bar tender in a few of these situations, and while it sucks to go in, wait an hour, and not get to work...it's part of the gig. Adults should understand their gig....and what the parts are.

As for the Constitution, you totally missed the point. Some of us on here were discussing what should be, not what is.

We are going to have to have revolution to get these people out of micromanaging every aspect of our lives. Nobody is saying NO to these totalitarians. Nobody is.

They are over-reaching to their own demise.

You’re right, it’s a very minimal problem and only impacts a couple industries, and the people in those industries understand it.

Well now that fedgov has replaced dad/husband, and has become the dad/husband, you now see the dad/husband fighting for better treatment of their dependent wives (ie women).

Small businesses often work at paper thin margins. Things can happen at the last minute that changes plans and makes a given employee's job unnecessary. Paying that employee to do nothing could cripple the business.

A law like this could put some businesses out of business. A lot of on-demand employees would loose their second job

And like the others have already said their is no constitutional basis for a law like this.

“I have heard of this “going to work and told to go home”, but I wonder how much of a problem it is that the government must get involved. “

Actually, it’s a pretty big problem. I talk to fast-food workers, Walmart clerks, etc. all the time. And they are REALLY being fvcked over because management is too lazy to bother with proper scheduling and to stick to it. Seems to me like pretty much ALL of these workers are on call ALL the time and can, and usually are, called in to work just hours or minutes before they are needed. The abuse is actually pretty horrible and disruption to family life is essentially almost intolerable.

The problem with a government (Democrat) solution is that it’s likely to cause as many problems as it fixes. If the Republicans were smart (yeah, I know) and weren’t totally bought out by big business (yeah, I know), they’d get in front of this and write their own bill, but minimize the regulations at the same time as maximizing the help for the people being fvcked over. If the Republicans would actually help the people once in a while, they wouldn’t be hated so much.

The Democrat party isn’t going to be happy until they’ve destroyed every last private sector job in the country.

We have a winner! What they can't control, they despise. Typical elitists.

There is a point to having people not put a kid in daycare, then be sent home. I can see that. But, ordering shift regulations is not the way. The way is, if you schedule someone, they come, and then are sent home, the biz must cover daycare and transportation costs. That’s all. No more than that.

Yeah, I've heard of this too. It is a real problem. And now, because of Obamacare, people must work two part time jobs, and the scheduling becomes even hairier.... OMG I JUST THOUGHT OF A HUGE POSSIBLE MONEYMAKER!!!!!!!

I agree with you. I see the point of the original post, but, don’t see that we need a federal law to deal.with it.

The idiots in congress completely ignore the constitution.

I believe one of the most compelling arguments for limited government is the thought of emotionally charged mob of morons hanging on the words of power hungry demagogues and putting them in positions of power.

Don’t know if it is law or just SOP for many employers, but it seems to be standard where I live that if someone is called in, they receive a minimum of 4 hours.

I know with the bus company I worked for, if you are at work for a run and the bus won’t start and they send a replacement bus and driver for your run, you are paid for it. Since we get the equipment that is ‘timed out’ from other jurisdictions (often 10 years elsewhere), this happens often! Based on how ‘frugally’ (wink, wink) the company operates, I presume this must be the law, rather than beneficent action on management’s part.

If there were legislation calling for minimum 4 hours of pay, it would require some thinking on the part of management before last minute call outs or sending someone home before they start their shift.

Check. Don't hire single women. Anything else Warren wants to do to help women?

If this is a good idea then have introduced in your state legislature. Not everything is a Federal issue.

Sorry Laz, I disagree with your post#50.

The answer is: When an Employer treats you like crap you look elsewhere.

No one forced a gun to their head and made them apply to work there and no one is going to give a crap if they go elsewhere

Do I think that treatment is wrong? Heck yes. The answer should be left to the market. If enough people refuse to put up with it the Employer will either change their behavior or go out if business due to lack or poor service/ product because they can’t gire anyone

I speak from experience on this. I walked off two jobs in my life and told the employer why when I did. Funny thing, both went under.

I dunno. The government has made employment a mess. It blew up full time employment for these people.

Now, I have come up with a free market solution for this scheduling issue, and I can make money at it too.
