Jeb Bush shaped by troubled Phillips Academy years (Vietnam conscientious objector?)
Boston Globe ^ | 7/18/15 | Michael Kranish

In the fall of 1967, when a 14-year-old Texan named John Ellis Bush arrived on the bucolic campus of Phillips Academy in Andover, great expectations preceded him.

-snip-

A few weeks after graduation, on July 16, 1971, Bush filled out an index card on which he registered for the draft. (A copy of the card was obtained by the Globe under the Freedom of Information Act.) On the line requesting a contact, he listed his father, who continued to serve as Nixon’s United Nations ambassador: “Amb. George H. W. Bush, Waldorf Towers . . . New York City.”

Bush received a draft number of 26 on a calendar-based scale that went to 365, earning him a “1A” classification that meant he probably would have been drafted if the war continued at full pace.

But he avoided such a fate because the war was winding down — a fact for which some credit was due those of his generation who participated in protests that he had refused to join.

Bush’s mother, Barbara Bush, once told United Press International that Jeb had considered declaring himself a conscientious objector, adding that the family would have backed such a decision.

With the draw down in Vietnam, fewer military were needed and volunteers were sufficient after 1971 to fill the remaining slots.

...Don’t think so. I had a 4S until graduating in June ‘72 and had a draft notice coming in August ‘72. Enlisted instead for duty choice. But the Draft Boards were still active and selecting.

ymmv

Intentionally deceptive article. Jebby was born in 1953, thus, his lottery number was from the fourth lottery held on Feb. 2, 1972.

Here's a line from an article about Nixon signing into law an end to deferments for college students:

Men do not get their lottery numbers until the calendar year in which they have their 19th birthday, and they are not eligible for induction until the calendar year in which they turn 20.

So, Jebby first became eligible for induction on Jan. 1, 1973. Twenty-six days later, Nixon announced that no more draft notices would be sent.

Note how the "writer" ommitted these details. Did Jebby's conversation with his mother happen during that 26 day period? The "writer" didn't want you to know, so omitted it.

Rule #1: when specific dates are available through 5 minutes of internet looking - and the "writer" fails to cite them, suspect dishonesty.

I feel you. I volunteered for Iraq but got out when Obama was in power. No way in hell I fight for a Democrat and their drafts, enlisting American people in government any chance they get to empower themselves

So he was 18 in 1971, just out of High School. He registered for the draft as he was required to do. He was heading for college which was at minimum another 4 year deferment. That makes it 1975, the year Saigon fell to those commie bastrds.

This story is beyond contrived.

The draft ended well before 1975.

No joking I think this clown choomed more marijuana at prep school than Obama. This put all kinds of stupid s__t in your head such as “Why don’t I go to Mexico and marry a woman 15” shorter than me and totally out of my social class”

BTW serious speculation is that his wife does not speak coherent English. They spoke Spanish at home with their children. Blame that prep school chooming.

Looking at the wedding photo, the bride looks like a twelve year old playing dress up. What kind of guy that age seeks out a childish looking girl? Hell, at that age hormones are screaming for adult type women. Have to wonder if maybe that was a Jerry Lee Lewis thing.

I am sure the story of a cynical kid at a cynical high school is unique to the Bush’s. //sarc

He sounds like every other prep school prick I knew back then, and since.

Obama’s 1980 Selective Service form: Is there any way to get a copy of Obama’s 1980 Selective Service form the same way that a copy of Bush's draft card was obtained?

I know that. The war ended in 1975 so by the time he could have been drafted, there was no war to fight.

While the war ended in ‘75, the ground war was done in ‘72, most of our guys were out in ‘73.

Of course either of us could google the end of the draft.

The point is anyone getting worked up over his not going into the service needs to chill. He wasn’t a draft dodger. He didn’t need to be.

I don’t understand; What’s wrong with petite women? I’m 4’10” tall and I love being petite. I’m not a child. Granted, I wouldn’t want a man THAT much taller than me. It’s Columba’s background and her insistence of the family speaking Spanish that bother me.

Yes, you are correct that draft boards were still operating In 1972. Just under 50,000 men were inducted in 1972 and 646 in 1973. These numbers should be compare to almost 300,000 in each of 1968 and 1969 and almost 400,000 in the peak Vietnam-era year of 1966. I should have said “after 1972” instead of “after 1971.”
