I love Singer. He was supposed to appear at a Broadway theatre thing but couldn’t make it—it was near the end of his life. So we got George Plimpton instead. Funny, but . . .

I didn’t know that he created Tevye on Broadway. I thought Zero Mostel did.

“It is part of our work to die...but we are not going to die. Do you believe me? DO YOU BELIEVE ME?”

Later: “To you, my friend, and you, my friend, and all of us together...”

“To you, my friend, and you, my friend, and all of us together...”

That song was the first thing that came to mind to quote, but I couldn't quite remember the words, just the tune!

We were caretakers on their estate for a few years, good people, nice kids! I had no idea who he was, he was rarely home when we work working in the yard, etc. Then one night my mom called and told me he was on Columbo — I loved that episode!!! Funny thing was, the next day I opened the door to go out and he was standing there, just about to knock. All I could say was, I just saw you on Columbo last night! Over and over!! I think was 20 or 21?? Best part is that he was coming over to invite us to an evening performance in NY — limo picked us up, the whole works! We stayed a few years until we could save to buy a house, when we left my brother and his wife moved in and did the same thing. They helped a lot of young couples get their financial feet on the ground, and I will ALWAYS be grateful!

Rest in peace Theodore — and thank you for blessing us with the grace of your estate — it was a perfect start to our marriage! Changed our lives forever!!!

He played the King of Serbia in Moulin Rouge back in the 50s. He was also the German captain in The African Queen.

Unfortunately, he was also a huuuuuuge lefty, always running for the World Zionist Congress on the Labor Zionist ticket. How he must have relished his role in the "Four O'Clock" episode of "The Twilight Zone."

Somebody has to make the obligatory Star Trek reference.

Bikel also played Worf's adopted Russian father in "Star Trek: The Next Generation."
