Hillary Clinton pit stops at Detroit pie shop on way to Grosse Pointe fundraiser

Presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton visited a small business in northwest Detroit Tuesday on her way to a $2,700-plus-per-ticket Grosse Pointe fundraiser scheduled Tuesday evening.

Clinton spent about 40 minutes mingling with patrons and spoke briefly with media from Sweet Potato Sensations, a specialty pie company at 17337 Lahser.

"Michigan is always important to me personally, and I think to the country," the former secretary of state said, adding that the collaborative commitment to Detroit among politicians, activists, residents and businesses has caught her attention.

"The more we can bring people back into working on behalf of their own futures and the neighborhoods they live in and the communities they're a part of, that's what is going to bring back cities like Detroit," she said. " ... There is a real opportunity here."

Before parting, Clinton was asked for her opinion on the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a trade deal that has some area employees, especially those in the auto industry, concerned their jobs could be negatively impacted

"First of all, I'm going to wait to see what's in it ... " Clinton said, "and I'm going to judge as to whether or not it creates good jobs, whether it protects the jobs we have and whether it's good for our national security."

Clinton said she visited the Detroit pie business because she hopes to be thought of as the "small business president," Chad Livengood of the Detroit News reported.

"And I'm making a real point of sort of identifying and visiting small businesses that are successful, sometimes against the odds, but really provide either a service or product that people in their communities are buying up and giving a good base for further growth," Clinton said, according to The News. "And that's what we need to do more of."

Based on the results the Associated Press-GfK poll released last week, Clinton's popularity is on the decline.

About 39 percent of Americans have a favorable view of Clinton, while 49 percent have an unfavorable view, according to the latest survey. In an AP-GfK poll conducted at the end of April, 46 percent had a favorable opinion and just 41 percent had an unfavorable opinion of Clinton.

The "Conversation with Hillary" fundraiser event Tuesday evening will be held at the Grosse Pointe home of David Katz and Jill Alper, a national political strategist who has worked on several presidential campaigns. Tickets start at $2,700.

This story is pretty fluffy compared to some of the comments I've seen out of Detroiters on twitter. One twitter commenter pointed out that she went to 93% white Grosse Pointe to speak for $2700 while Rand Paul went to 93% black Highland park to speak and didn't charge anything.

Mingling with patrons? They mean mingling with the hand selected lap dogs placed to make her look good? I thought so.

Hill is pretty much an empty pantsuit - even for Democrats. Refried beans at every stop.

Rand Paul needs a much better publicist. I just found out about his event literally three minutes ago. I happened to stumble next to that headline.

I’m not a Rand Paul fan but there is something other candidates can learn from him.

Go where the democrats fear to tread, listen to the concerns of the locals and lay out your case. No pandering required.

Is the “small business president” tanking by trying to sell $2700 tickets to small businesses?
Maybe this is why she’s dead broke.

maybe deetroiters will work in a pie shop but I doubt it. Free water for all and “bring home the bacon”. Finance keeping the street lights on and brag about it.
