Coast Guard search-and-rescue crews are searching for two missing 14-year-old boys in the vicinity of Jupiter.

Austin Stephanos (left) and Perry Cohen (right), both 14, were reported missing after not returning from a fishing trip on Friday off the coast of Jupiter, Florida.

They were last seen at approximately 1:30 p.m after purchasing $110 worth of fuel.

Officials received a report that the boys had disappeared at about 5 p.m. after they didn’t return to shore at the expected time. The Coast Guard had covered about 5,300-square nautical miles by Saturday morning.

The Palm Bay Sheriff’s Office is also providing assistance.

The boys did not pack much food or water, and were due back Friday afternoon after fishing near the Jupiter Inlet, Coast Guard Petty Officer Mark Barney said.

Anyone with information on the boys’ whereabouts is asked to contact authorities.

Update: Update, 2:30 p.m.: Crews located an overturned boat off the coast of Jacksonville, but is still investigating its connection to the missing teens, officials report.

The boat fits the physical description of the 19-foot vessel that the boys disappeared in. They are bringing the boat to shore in Jacksonville to investigate further, according to officials.

Prayers going out for this family

I’ve been in an open 22’footer in 6’ swells in the gulfstream. Unnerving to be at the bottom of the trough and see only wave crests all around.

Underground weather radar loop covering Florida for Friday.

Looks like a front was churning through firing off thunderstorms. Storms like this can hit winds of 60mph on open water very fast.

19 foot
one engine is what was reported on the local Palm Beach news last night.
I wouldn’t go across to Bimini or Freeport any time this week as the storms are building all over.
And a single engine is just stupid.

Looks like family is confirming the boat (from wpbf):

JUPITER, Fla. —The family of one of the missing teen boaters told WPBF 25 Sunday afternoon that their overturned boat was found off Jacksonville.

The fate of the teens is unknown.

Perry Cohen and Austin Stephanos, both 14, were aboard a 19-foot white single-engine boat.

The U.S. Coast Guard said the boat is being towed to Jacksonville.

The teens were last seen around 1 p.m. Friday after buying $110 worth of fuel at The Jib.

Perry and Austin left shore en route to the Bahamas.

The disappearances were alerted to Tequesta police at about 5 p.m.

Tequesta officers, along with the Palm Beach and Martin County sheriff’s offices, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the U.S. Coast Guard, searched through the night for the teens.

The U.S. Coast Guard said it had covered 14,447 nautical miles as of Sunday morning.

Pam Telvi Cohen, Perry’s mother, said there is a $100,000 reward for the boys’ safe return.

The families held a news conference Sunday morning thanking the public for their support. They also thanked the Coast Guard.

“The commitment (of the U.S. Coast Guard) has been fantastic,” said Nick Korniloff, Perry’s stepfather.

Football Hall of Famer Joe Namath is a neighbor of the families and joined them at Sunday’s press conference.

This doesn’t look good. Wonder if they were wearing PFDs? At this stage I am only kayaking in protected waters, and I don’t get in the boat without one on. It has had to do it’s job once already.

Its looking like one of those squals flipped the boys over...CG requires they have Life jackets on board.hope they were wearing them...Investigation of the 19 may show them missing which is a good sign.
If the were wearing the boys should have traveled with the boat or at the same rate of speed.Keep the prayers going out for these 2.
They look like good kids.

53 miles west of Venus

Actually, Bimini is 53 miles directly east of Miami. A standard boat can easily get there in well under 2 hours with decent waters, which are common this time of year.

I’ve been out to the Gulf Stream off NC in a pretty good-sized Grady White, and even that was a little unnerving.

Tequesta police say the Coast Guard reported the “engine cover was found to be missing along with one Personal Floatation Device (PFD) still on the boat.”

Looks like engine probs they were dealing with Life Jacket missing.Hopefully they are both hanging on to it.Looks pretty bleak

Hopefully there were more than two PFDs on the boat.

Capsized

Hope they had sense enough to have vests on

One vest recovered onboard, most boats that size would have at least three or four.
