Sen. Cruz: Today’s Events Show the McConnell-Reid Leadership Team Operates for One Party: The Washington Party

American people elected a Republican majority believing it would somehow be different from a Democratic one

Video of Sen. Cruz’s floor speech today

WASHINGTON, D.C. – After speaking on the Senate floor today, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) issued the following statement:

“We’ve just seen something extraordinary on the Senate floor. The American people elected a Republican majority believing that a Republican majority would be somehow different from a Democratic majority in the United States Senate. Unfortunately, the way the current Senate operates, there is one party, the Washington party.

“Senate leadership consists of the McConnell-Reid leadership team. They operate as a team. They support the same priorities. If you look at what has occurred in the United States Senate since the Republicans took a majority, we immediately returned after winning a historic majority to pass a trillion dollar ‘cromnibus’ bill filled with corporate welfare and pork. Then, the so-called Republican majority voted to fund Obamacare. Then, the so-called Republican majority voted to fund President Obama’s unconstitutional executive amnesty. Then, the so-called Republican majority voted to confirm Loretta Lynch as attorney general. Then, just moments ago, the so-called Republican majority voted to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank, an egregious example of cronyism and corporate welfare.

“Every one of those is the priority of the Democratic leader Harry Reid. Every one of those is the priority of the Republican leader, Mitch McConnell. They operate as a team, expanding Washington and undermining the liberty of the people. What we just saw a moment ago is unprecedented in the annals of Senate history. It consisted of the majority leader and the minority leader denying members the ability to have votes on their amendments and indeed the ability even to have a roll call vote. The denial of a second, as you just saw a moment ago, which was aggressively whipped by the majority, is an extraordinary measure designed to gag Senators and enforce the will of the McConnell-Reid leadership team.

“It saddens me as a Republican to see Republican leadership lead the effort to kill an amendment that would have prevented lifting sanctions on Iran unless and until Iran recognizes Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state and unless and until Iran releases American hostages. Make no mistake – granting a sufficient second for a roll call vote is done customarily in the United States Senate. Denying it is extraordinary, and it is done as a consequence of the majority leader Mitch McConnell being afraid for his members to be on record on this issue.

“We then, subsequently, saw Senator Mike Lee from Utah bring up his amendment to defund Planned Parenthood. We have seen in recent weeks gruesome videos of senior officials of Planned Parenthood discussing the selling of body parts of unborn children. These videos are horrifying, and yet it saddens me greatly that the Republican leader led the effort to continue the taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood.

“Make no mistake — when the majority leader whipped Republicans to vote alongside Democrats, it was no surprise that Democrats did not want to vote on that because Democrats in this chamber do not purport to support the right to life. But to see the so-called Republican leadership whip against allowing a vote to defund Planned Parenthood — it has the virtue of clarity. It makes clear that the McConnell-Reid leadership team is united in favor of big government spending and debt and power.

“The McConnell-Reid leadership team has no interest in cutting off one penny of funds to Planned Parenthood, which is why leader Mitch McConnell just blocked a vote on defunding Planned Parenthood. To the millions of Americans who rallied in November believing if only we got a Republican majority in the Senate something would be different, this was a clarifying and a sad moment.”

Ted has just been introduced to the uniparty.

I’m very concerned about their safety. I don’t know how I would respond if anything happens to either of them. I know I will automatically think it was the uniparty machine.

Buchannan didn’t run against W. He ran against Old Man Bush.

I’m sure they are well aware of their surroundings. But I would not be remotely shocked to see an ‘accident’ happen regardless of how many people died in that ‘accident’. Because liberals simply see it as a means to an end and if we lose a fully loaded plane or a building with them in it to ‘terrorism’ they would make sure it happened.

The Clinton win was caused directly by a tired, wornout candidate named George HW Bush. The turnout was low on our side as a result..Clinton sailed easily into the white house. He also ran to the center..if you recall..

In any case, pat’s numbers were too low to affect it.

GHWB lost that race...he gave up, gave out, and the media shredded him.

He sought the Republican presidential nomination in 1992 and 1996. He ran on the Reform Party ticket in the 2000 presidential election.

I know W won. Pat Buchannan ran against his daddy and it was said at the time that it hurt Bush. I agree with Cold Heat. Old Man Bush didn’t want to win.

I also wonder if it wasn’t a set up. Bush steps aside for Clinton. W gets two terms. Then Hillary gets two terms. But a monkey wrench was thrown in named Obama.

If I recall, Clinton was a bit of a monkey wrench too...In the primary run he was not even contending and then.......wham, bam..

This is why I don’t get too excited early in the primary..The real stuff will happen next year.

Once again we see that the lesser evils flatly refuse to back up their assertions with fact and simply sling off hoping people forger.

It’s not just Mitt, my friend. It’s Thad, and Mitch, and Lamar, and all the rest who followed the Turtle like a bunch of sheep, today. I wouldn’t vote for any of them.

In this case, the “lesser evil” is, in fact, the greater evil.

to use a metaphor, i’m doing what i can to plow my tiny patch of the field, but will he now put his hand to the plow in this same field, or will he continue to plow in his?

I'm sorry, but it still sounds like you're asking Ted Cruz to do it all. You expect superhuman feats from the man -- for your and my benefit.

For my money (of which I have given to him), he's done more for the conservative cause and the Constitution in his short time in office, than any ten other Senators have done in their entire careers. He's been a fearless champion for the founding precepts that gave birth to this nation, and I thank him for it.

Given a chance, and tons of support from the folks back home, he'll do much more, but he's not a god. He's not even godlike. Any man can only do so much alone, and he is pushing against the mightiest leviathan on the planet with very little assistance.

If you think there ought to be an alternate party for him to lead, then brother, get out there and start building it.

I think it’s far too early for me to speculate...Trump is a wildcard.

Agree. I've qualified most of my optimistic statements about him with reminders that he can be unpredictable. There's a very big IF hanging over him right now. Especially among conservatives. No one knows if he'll do something that will cause his campaign to implode.

He's been known to show up with all sorts of bluster and bravado, only to fold his cards and leave when he tires of the game. He could still do that, but I'm convinced that he's in it to win it this time. He's too deeply committed, and is gaining far too much ground to give it up.

If he keeps making gains over the next few months, and doesn't step in something really nasty, I think the trust factor among conservatives will rise. For some, he may have to survive until this time next year, for them to finally trust him. We'll see. There's still a long road ahead.
