"A vile act no matter which way you look at it, but DHS?"

Well, YES it is vile and meant to send a hateful message. Refuting that message, though, by calling DHS is meaningless. Much more meaningful would have been a show of support from the community itself. There is all sorts of "trash" littered about in the area. They could have held a clean-up day with hundreds showing up to clean up the litter in the area and proclaiming that they don't tolerate filthy garbage or filthy messages in their yards.

Please understand that I don't in any way consider the confederate flag itself filthy, but the act of tossing them into the yard of a black church is a nasty MESSAGE.

Years ago when I was Homeowner's President of our community in Charlotte, someone painted racial slurs all over a black neighbor's home. I put out a call and nearly the whole neighborhood showed up that day to clean up our neighbor's home and surround this family with love and support. This, they said, meant much much more to them than if we had only called the police to handle it.
