If it were a conservative outlet, they would be screaming “That’s not good enough - close it down permanently and prosecute the woners!”
Yup. I’ve handled a number of defamation cases for newspapers/magazines/etc. Typically, they like to fight tooth and nail—many believe that their journalistic ethics (ha!) demand it, and that having a reputation for doing so helps to attract talented writers. In this case? Where they’ve already retracted and apologized? Where the editor has already resigned? They are going to want to make this thing go away ASAP.
The story wasn’t “botched,” it was faked.
They have no standing in the world of serious journalism and their readers(?) exemplify the low information stoners our country is generating by the millions.
Are they crazy? Add at least two more zeroes to the end of that compensation amount. That will bury the rag and put the jerks that work there on the unemployment rolls.
And all of the employees sent to northern Alaska!

Unlike UVA or the dean there, these men were not public figures. Nor did they insert themselves into the vector of this public discussion. Therefore, the burden of proof for libel is much lower. You will never convince me that everyone involved in this sham of a story at RS was not “willfully negligent”. I hope they can every penny they ask for and then some.
