My maternal grandmother was Cherokee. If she passed a kid with bare feet on her way to the grocery store she would buy shoes for the kid and serve oatmeal for supper.

Thank you for the anecdote. I've heard similar stuff from just about every tribe.

Even Quanah Parker, last chief of the Comanche to surrender and report to the reservation was the same way. A total badass as a chief who killed and tortured with impunity, he had a good deal of wealth (livestock, wives, etc.) when he finally reported into the reservation in Oklahoma.

By the time he died some years later, it was all gone. Everyone who needed a handout would go to Quanah and he'd give them the shirt off his back if necessary. Fortunately, for his surviving wives, a few of the many recipients of his largess took care of them.
