Former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore formally announced his bid for the White House Thursday, becoming the 17th Republican presidential primary candidate.

"I am a candidate for president because our current Washington leadership is guiding America on a path to decline, and I can reverse that decline," Gilmore said in a video message to supporters.

Gilmore filed paperwork earlier this week with the Federal Election Commission. His announcement comes one week before the first Republican primary debate, hosted by Fox News and Facebook.

Gilmore, a former Army intelligence officer, served as Virginia's governor from 1998 to 2002.

Wouldn’t it just be a lot simpler for every republican office holder — state and federal — to announce they are running for president? Thus it begins — the insanity every 4 years where enormous amounts of undeserved attention are paid to 2 piss ant low population and totally unimportant states, Iowa and New Hampshire. Iowa is probably the most ridiculous as it doesn’t even have an primary election.

I thought so too. He was very well spoken and for what ever reason, I liked his answers. I think everyone should be giving him a chance. Just saying.

...............saw him on Bret Baier, and he sounded very promising. He sounded great, spoke very well, and I will give him a chance to make his mark.

Agreed. Certainly made me sit up and take notice!!!

Jim Gilmore was governor of Virginia, 1998-2002; and RNC chairman, 2001-’02. He was only RNC chairman for a year because he wanted to concentrate on electing conservatives, in 2002. George W. Bush and Karl Rove didn’t care about electing conservatives, so Gilmore quit, as chairman. Bush appointed Gilmore to a commission that was charged with preventing terrorist attacks. It was nicknamed the Gilmore Commission. He was an army officer, in the 1970’s. During most of that time, he was stationed in Germany, and he still speaks German, well.

While he was governor, he cut tax rates and balanced the budget, all four years. He signed a bill that requires each minor, who wants an abortion, to get consent from a parent. He would have banned almost all VA abortions, if that bill would have passed the VA legislature. He says that, if he becomes president, he’ll cut spending from every department. He wants to secure the border, a lot better, and deport a lot more illegal aliens.
