Don’t Worry, TrumpMania Will Fade Away
PJ Media ^ | 07-31-2015 | Michael van der Galien

Like Jonathan S. Tobin at Commentary, I have little doubt that TrumpMania will soon fade away. There has always been a willingness among a part of the electorate to get behind an angry outsider, but when push comes to shove, even those voters opt for a candidate they can trust. Trump simply isn’t that guy. Tobin’s third argument, which I consider to be the most important one, is as follows:

"Third, the assumption on the part of some that a public that has been watching Trump on TV for years already knows all it cares to learn about the man is equally unfounded. I doubt that most of those on the right applauding his outrageous act are aware of Trump’s long history of backing for liberal causes and even his financial support for Hillary Clinton’s Senate campaigns and their family charity that operates as a political slush fund for the former first couple."

Another good argument:

"Fourth, as I noted last week, the basic culture of American democracy is something that is designed to trip up demagogues. This wouldn’t be the first case of populism run amuck in American history and there are some obvious examples of outlier figures having a major impact on the outcome of elections."

t’s very simple. When it boils down to it, Trump is not actually conservative. He has, all throughout his life, supported Democrats. Two of the most important recipients of his support (financial and otherwise) are Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. There’s no chance in hell that the conservative base will let him get away with that. Of course there are some who argue that Ronald Reagan “was originally a Democrat as well,” but that comparison doesn’t hold. Reagan broke quite visibly with the Democrats and attacked them ruthlessly.

Well, I’ll let it all play out before I get too optimistic. Interested in the debate coming up.

“trip up demagogues?” If so, why hasn’t it worked on Zero?

True that.

Even though Norman Lear was basically poking fun at what he perceived as middle America, people related to the “everyman working Joe” Archie versus the Meathead counterculture imagery. It’s why that show worked so well.

Cruz will pick up the lion’s share of Trump’s support.

Carly will likely see more gain from a Trump meltdown than Cruz simply because she is not part of the DC crowd either.

This forum has ignored Carly but I have warned that she is clearly better prepared for the debates than anyone.

True. Also, he didn’t let Meathead off the hook either, for some of the dumbass things he spouted.

Loved Edith’s character. Slightly bubbleheaded, but Sweet, lovable, with a good heart and soul. Jean Stapleton played it well.

I remember the episode where Edith passed away; I cried like a baby over a fictional character’s passing.

"If you get your wish you will find out what a totally unimpeded liberal could do to this country. Risky experiment.

"unimpeded liberal" ...As opposed to our current president or any of the GOPe candidates?

See my post 124 in this thread

And then tell me what you think Trump is going to be liberal on that is still worrying you.

There is one scene I’ll always remember, and it showed just how good Carol O’Connor was as an actor.

It involved having the Vietnam Draft Dodger sitting at the dinner table, when Archie finds out....you just feel the rage coming out from him, and it wasn’t played for laughs.

Here's the bottom line: Obama and his media and the Democrats and GOPe created this massive, MASSIVE vacuum of not just leadership, but also of truth, transparency, genuity/authenticity, decency, morality, common sense, etc., etc., etc.

And Trump is stepping into that vacuum with enough gravitas and fight and leadership and confidence to fill it and then some.

That's why people don't care what Trump says or that he is inarticulate or blustery...they only care that he is willing to lead the country in the diametrically opposite direction from Obama.

RE O’Conner:

I will always remember him as “The General” in Kelly’s Heroes.

“General - they seem to think you’re DeGaulle!”

“DeGaulle???? Hell, He ain’t even IN this war!!!!! VIVE LES AMERICANS!!!!”

Great flick....

Trump will fade when the GOPe fields a passionate conservative candidate.
